Overview

Vehicle painters apply various coats of paint to the body motor vehicles. Often this is done after the vehicle has been involved in a collision and repair work has been done by a panel beater. Painters may also restore vehicles that have scratches or small dents from general use. They mix paints to ensure a good match of the new paint to the colour of the existing paint.

Duties

 Select, safely use and maintain workplace tools and equipment  Convey information in the workplace and maintain customer/enterprise/government records  Develop and maintain communications with customers  Carry out cleaning of components by mechanical or chemical means and remove components in preparation for either storage or repair  Carry out the removal and replacement / fit decals, transfers and protector mouldings  Inspect a vehicle’s paint and / or trim and / or accessories and make recommendations regarding repair / replacement methods  Carry out the application of masking medium in preparation for vehicle / component painting  Carry out the removal of surface rust/scale and prepare repairs for application of primers, apply primers and / or sealers  Carry out the preparation of spray painting equipment and paint materials  Carry out the preparation / mixing of paints and the preparation of colour mix testcard for visual colour matching  Determine cause for a variety of paint finish faults and carry out rectification  Carry out the preparation and application of finishing materials to plastic surfaces  Carry out buffing and brushing procedures on a range of vehicle body refinishing materials  Clean and perform a final inspection of repaired vehicle before delivery to a customer  Carry out the application of refinishing materials to a variety if vehicle substrates gun or brush application and determine causes and rectification procedures for paint finish faults  Knowledge, understanding and the ability to apply safe working procedures in relations to tasks associated with the motor vehicle industry.

Desirable

 Senior First aid certificate  Valid NSW Class C drivers licence  Knowledge of Internet and Database ordering mechanisms  Knowledge of current occupational health and safety issues effecting the industry
