Background

Professions to support workforce planning and development. In 2012 work commenced in NES to establish a more robust data platform related to AHPs in training and in the workforce in NHS Scotland. This works is supported by the NES AIM for Workforce Programme (Analysis, Intelligence and Modelling).Work on the institutional framework around the training and employment of the remaining AHP groups has begun with a range of reliable data sources identified for analysis and inclusion in further reports for each group. There remains a need to contextualise the education and workforce data with profession-specific information into each final report in liaison with relevant stakeholders e.g. professional bodies; service providers; Scottish Government and in collaboration with colleagues in the NES AIM for Workforce Programme.

Two reports have been finalised:

 Speech & Language Therapy http://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/media/2491052/slt_final_2013oct.pdf  Occupational Therapy http://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/media/2491055/ot_final_2013oct.pdf)

Three further reports are currently with critical readers or are in development:  Physiotherapy  Dietetics  Radiography (diagnostic and therapeutic)

Current work

Progress so far Engagement with the NES Groups/Think Tanks is sought as part of the information gathering process for the development of the following reports:  Arts Therapies  Orthoptists  Prosthetics and Orthotics  Podiatry

This is to be achieved by:

Working in collaboration with AIM for Workforce colleagues; the NES AHP Team and other Stakeholders - including the NES Group/Think Tank  Using the two first reports as a template for, contextualising the data, intelligence and feedback into each report to be developed

For each of the current reports, the following factual information is being gathered:

 Definition of the profession  Main conditions dealt with  Relevant policy documents -generic and specific e.g. HEAT Targets  Factors that impact on the existing workforce  Factors that impact on those employed and trained  Information about service needs and demands  •Information that is significant to workforce demands

The aim of these reports is to influence future workforce planning for AHP professions and identify training and development needs. Fiona discussed with Advisory members the best ways of gathering this information.

The specific issues raised by the group were:

Dance Movement Psychotherapy is not HCPC registered at the moment therefore no work statistics are available via ISD Action SSc to try and obtain this information and forward on.

Art Therapies all four professions have movement within a small workforce and work wider than the NHS.

The Dance Psychotherapy course has now stopped. Once the final cohort completes in June 2014 there will be no drama course available in Scotland . Difficult to identify service needs and demands as Art Therapies provide services to wide ranging client groups.

Alot of the Art Therapies professions will be retiring in the next few years and will not be replaced.

There is no infrastructure within the boards, many are line managed by outwith AHP Professional departments.

There are no clear Art Therapies referral processes, example being GPs don’t refer to Art Therapy professions as they do with other AHP professions. There still appears to be no awareness of the need for this service, therefore no demand.

Susan Scarth asked how NES could support Dance Movement Psychotherapy being part of this report.

Fiona will request information via the advisory groups and will email members in due course.

Hot Topics

1. CORE model JF informed the group there was a meeting tomorrow for the AHP CORE group. They have been looking at AHP delivering psychological therapies. The Art Therapies CORE group has been a challenge as the throughput is small and the short time of the pilot and interventions are more long term, therefore due to short time of pilot it has been difficult to demonstrate impact through outcomes.

2. S Sc asked if more funding would be available for extending and JF advised there was potential. 3. Service user consultations DH agreed to be present next time. And t informed the group there was a page on BAAT website there was podcasts and protocol to capture service users prospective http://www.baat.org/

6. Update on NES AHP Education and Development Strategy Refresh. SS updated group that the event had been well attended by AHPs, academics, researchers and patient reps from all over Scotland.NES will shortly send the suggested revisions out for further consultation. In general the feedback was that the three existing themes of developing the workforce at every level of the Career Framework, Making Communication even better and the need to sustain and embed NES resources were still relevant. There was agreement that the strategy needed to be updated to reflect recent policy developments ie. Health and Social Care Integration the AHP National Delivery Plan and the 20:20 Workforce Vision: Everyone Matters. Discussions at the event also highlighted the need for AHPs to work much more with and learn from patient representatives and to listen more to patient and carer experiences to enhance service delivery. It is suggested that there is a theme highlighting how AHPs put people at the centre of all that they do.

Action SS to ensure Art Therapies group members included in wider consultation of the refreshed NES AHP Education and Development Strategy.
