Earth S Amazing Atmosphere

Earth’s Atmosphere Diagram Signature: ______

Earth’s atmosphere is divided into four main layers. Follow the directions below to label the diagram of Earth’s atmosphere. Follow each direction carefully and take your time.

LAYERS (10 Points)

____ Label the four layers of the atmosphere on the diagram.

____ Label the two sub layers of the thermosphere.

____ Write the temperature ranges in each layer of the atmosphere in Fahrenheit.

CHARACTERISTICS (10 points) Match the following characteristics to the correct layers of Earth’s atmosphere.

____ Humans live here

____ Coldest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere

____ Hottest layer of the atmosphere

____ Contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone

____ Contains most of the atmosphere’s air

____ Weather balloons fly here to collect weather data

____ The water cycle is most active in this layer of Earth’s atmosphere

____ Phone and TV signals come from this layer of Earth’s atmosphere

____ Radio signals come from this layer of Earth’s atmosphere

____ The International Space Station currently orbits in this layer of Earth’s atmosphere

SYMBOLS (10 Points) Use the clues to create each of the following symbols in the correct layers of Earth’s atmosphere.

____There is no clear boundary between the uppermost layer of the atmosphere and space. The atmosphere becomes thinner and thinner and blends into space. At the very top of the diagram, write the word SPACE with an arrow pointing up.

____The ozone layer is the upper part of the atmospheric layer that contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone. Using the key, find the symbol for ozone. Draw several symbols across the page to represent the ozone layer on the diagram.

____The ozone layer is important because it absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Draw a purple wavy line coming from space down to the ozone layer. Label this line UV radiation to represent the UV radiation that is absorbed by the ozone layer.

____ Draw and color airplanes in the layers (2) of the atmosphere in which airplanes fly.

____ Draw and color a cloud in the layer of the atmosphere that has weather.

____ Draw five falling stars in the layer of the atmosphere that burns up meteoroids coming to Earth. Color them yellow.

____ In each layer you will draw either a red or blue arrow. Draw a red arrow pointing up if the temperature increases as it goes up in that layer. Draw a blue arrow pointing down if the temperature decreases as it goes up in that layer.

____To the right of the diagram, draw a green line from the top of the atmosphere to the bottom of the atmosphere. Add an arrow to one end of the green line, showing which direction pressure increases in the atmosphere.

____The Aurora borealis (northern lights) occur in this layer. Draw and color them purple, blue, and red.
