The British Red Cross is the largest voluntary humanitarian organisation in the world. It promotes humanitarian values, and provides emergency help to people in crisis in the UK and overseas. Within the UK, the British Red Cross operates through 34,000 volunteers and 2,500 staff.

Interns at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring to our work. We hope to provide our interns with an insight into the daily internal workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The successful candidate will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during the course of their placement. There may be ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of work where appropriate.

1 This internship
The opportunity will provide an effective means of developing research and fundraising skills for someone with no previous direct fundraising experience or who wishes to develop them further. It will also develop their communication skills and knowledge of the work of an international charity. The volunteer will be responsible for supporting the work of the Project Information Co-ordinator and experienced fundraisers and in learning Trust & Statutory, Corporate and Major Donor fundraising skills by working as a fundraising researcher and being supported and mentored by more experienced colleagues. We are seeking a volunteer to commit to working with us for a minimum of three months (days negotiable).
The volunteer’s research fundraising skills will be developed via supported direct experience so that they will have the ability to carry out research into the Society’s UK and overseas work, support the submission of funding applications and updates & manage mini projects. Training days offered include ‘Welcome Workshop’, ‘Save a Life’ and ‘Ideals in Action', the Society’s unique training on its fundamental principles and humanitarian law.
Main Duties and Responsibilities > To support the High Value Giving & Events Department in the development of effective appeals and updates aimed at Trusts and Statutory bodies, Companies and Major Donors so as to raise income for Society’s work in the UK and overseas
> To assist in the process of providing timely proposals, feedback and reports to donors (under the direction of Project Information Co-ordinator)
> To support the Project Information Co-ordinator in undertaking qualitative research to identify specific internal and external information on the Society’s UK and overseas work
> To report regularly to the Project Information Co-ordinator who is mentoring and supporting their work
> To access and update the key fundraising tools as per agreed guidelines
> To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to work within the British Red Cross’ Equal Opportunities Policy
> To undertake any other duties as requested by the Project Information Co-ordinator
2 Essential qualities we are looking for
> Educated to degree level or equivalent > Demonstrable interest in fundraising > Good written and verbal skills > Experience of writing effectively and concisely > Experience of office work > Research skills > Computer literate (in particular Excel and database applications) > Numerical skills > Analytical skills > Fluent written & spoken business level English > Flexible and able to prioritise workload > Resident in UK or planning to be before the Society can consider an application > Willing to commit to work with us for a minimum of 3 days a week for a minimum of 12 weeks.
Additional qualities which would be useful
> Experience of fundraising > Experience of research > Experience of working for a Charity in a paid or voluntary capacity > Able to interpret financial / budget information > An appreciation of the challenges involved in caring for donors
