Class Teacher

Maple Class 2016- 2017

Class teacher: Mrs E Gooding Welcome to Padbury CE School. Please remember that you may find that for the first half of the autumn term your child is slightly more tired at the end of the day, even though they are still following the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum

Literacy During the year the children will work with both fiction and non-fiction texts, which will often be linked to the topic. Initially there will be regular work on letter formation and phonics and as the year progresses sentence construction and punctuation.

Phonics Your child will have regular phonic sessions. By the end of the year the children will have been introduced to the 44 sounds.

Key words By October key words will be coming home each week on Friday. These words will need to be recognised by sight and NOT sounded out. I would ask you to regularly look at them with your child; I suggest you get your child to use the words to make different sentences, to play games with them or find them in books you are sharing. Appendix 1- copy of key words

Reading books Reading books will be issued once I feel that your child is ready for this more formal stage of their reading journey.

Speaking and Listening We have several soft toys which go home with the children at the weekend. They will come with their ‘diaries’ so that you (writing) and your child (drawing) can record something they have done with the soft toy (e.g. visit to a grandparent, playing with a friend, going shopping/for a walk, helping in the house). The diary will act as an ‘aide memoir’ for your child to talk about their weekend, and for the other children to listen and ask questions. You will only be asked to have them once a term (at the most) so I hope you can accommodate this request

Numeracy The children will explore number, measurement including time and capacity, data handling, shape, space and problem solving. The practical application of mathematical skills is at the core of our teaching. It would be helpful if you encourage your child to handle money, and to work with weight, measure and capacity at home. Appendix 2 – maths expectations

The World -Technology (Computing) Your child will have regular ICT sessions where they will develop their skills with ICT and begin to use ICT for a number of purposes. There is an interactive whiteboard in the classroom so that ICT can be integrated into other subjects. The World (Science, History, Geography, Art and DT) These will be taught through the following topics: Autumn 1: Ourselves Autumn 2: Light and Dark Spring 1: Underwater Adventures Spring 2: Houses and Homes Summer 1: Traditional Tales Summer 2: Minibeasts

RE Autumn: Celebrations and Festivals Spring: Special people and objects. Summer: Stories from the old and new testament Ongoing – Festivals

Values Curriculum Autumn – Co-operation and Thankfulness Spring – Trust and Forgiveness Summer – Respect and Perseverance Ongoing – Love

PSHE Themes Autumn –New beginnings Spring – Going for goals Summer – Changes Ongoing –Say no to bullying

Other useful information House Teams Your child will be put into a house team, either:  Jupiter (Green)  Neptune (Blue)  Mars (Red)  Saturn (Yellow). They will earn team points for their house for good work; these are counted at the end of the week and announced in celebration assembly.

Your child will sit with other members of their team from the rest of the school at lunchtime. During the year they will also have the opportunity to do team activities, for example on charity days. Expectations: We also aim to develop the ‘whole child’ and have both a formal and informal curriculum that allows children to develop their personal and social understanding of the world. We have high expectations of all the children and encourage pupils to have positive attitudes to learning. Everyone is expected to take responsibility for their actions and to show care and concern for people, the school and everything in it. We recognise that every member of the school community has a responsibility for promoting good behaviour in school. In Foundation Stage we encourage your child to be as independent as possible. Such as being able to:  Go to the toilet  Wash hands  Dress themselves independently  Change shoes  Do up their coat  Enter the school on their own

We discourage items being brought in from home; unless they are related to the topic.

PADLE Unfortunately at present PADLE is unavailable.

Homework: Your child will receive regular homework in the form of keywords, handwriting and mental maths. The homework will follow the letters, keywords and mental maths that your child has learnt during the week. These will come home on a Friday in a folder and will need to be returned by Wednesday.

The Values Ladder Each half term we focus on one of the Christian Values of Co-operation, Thankfulness, Trust, Forgiveness, Respect and Perseverance. The children are encouraged to display these values and are rewarded by being asked to move up the ladder. Once they reach the sunshine (top of the ladder) they are given a sticker for the board in the hall.

We also use ‘Bucket Filling’ as a way of promoting positive behaviour.

Concerns We are happy to discuss any concerns you may have about your child. Time in the morning is usually limited, however a short chat after school can usually be accommodated either that day or the following. If you are concerned about any aspect of your child’s school life we would rather you came in than worry unduly.

Maths in Foundation Stage is split into two areas, number and shape, space and measure. Both areas are equally important. The expectation by the end of Foundation Stage is:

Number: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Shape, space and measure: Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Mental Maths expectations At Padbury CE School we expect children by the end of foundation stage to know off by heart: • Recall the number bonds of 5 e.g. 4 + 1 • Recall the number bonds to a total of 5 e.g. 2 + 2 • Subtract two numbers within 5 e.g. 4 – 3 • Add one more to any number to 10 • Subtract one from any number to 10 • Count up in 2s to 20 • Count up in 5s to 50 • Count up in 10s to 100 • Doubles to 5 e.g. double 5 • Halves up to 10 e.g. half of 10
