Mi’kmaq Studies 10 Culture Project #2

This project’s objective is to have you learn about Mi’kmaq culture by means of your own research. You will share your project with the class thus we will all teach each other about Mi’kmaq culture.

WHAT YOU MUST DO FIRST:

 Decide if you are working with a partner or groups of no more than 3 people (partnership or groups must be approved)

 Decide on which aspect of Mi’kmaq culture you (or your pair or group) wish to study

You will begin with a brief overview of who the Mi’kmaq are. For this you will start by research a brief history of the people that will include:

1. Who the Mi’kmaq are 2. Where the tribes can be found in the Maritimes 3. When did the Mi’kmaq first inhabit the Maritimes 4. When did they first have European contact 5. Where are the communities located today.

*You may use the notes we have done in class and any web or text resource. Make sure that you keep a works cited list of where you have found your information.

Keep this brief!

Then you will select a topic to specialize in. You will research this topic in depth and report the information back to the class.

Topics include but are not limited to: (If you have another idea for a topic, just ask)

Communication Food Tools Past times Weapons Clothing Music/Musicians/Dance Legends Art/Artists Shelters Crafts/Craftspeople Family Customs/Beliefs/Religion Oral Tradition Hunting Economics For the subject you select you must detail in your research:

. What is it? A clear definition and explanation of the purpose. For each topic you should have no less than 5 examples.

. What was/is it used for? This can not be a simple statement. Your explanation of use must be detailed and clearly outlined. If you select a topic like language I would expect you to discuss the different types of languages found within the tribes and how the tribes communicated with each other.

. Significance to Mi’kmaq culture. (Why was it important?)

. Relevance to today’s world (culture) Is it still used today?

. What it tell us about Mi’kmaq people

THEN:

You must submit a project proposal. This proposal must outline:

 Who is working on the project and what are they doing in it  What topic you wish to study  What you plan to construct and sources you gathered from your research to help you.

(5 points: See project proposal sheet)

Once you proposal is approved you are ready to begin. The final project has four parts:

Part One: The Written Piece A 300 word (minimum) explanation of your topic.

You are to write:

 A brief overview of who the Mi’kmaq people are  What the topic is,  What it was/is used for,  Its significance to Mi’kmaq culture,  Its relevance to today’s world and what it tells us about the Mi’kmaq people.

This write up must be typed and have your name on it. You must include a bibliography including all of the sources you used to research your project. (12 points)

Part Two: The Unwritten Component

A “construction” that represents your research topic. This could be creating a model, a video, a slideshow, a song, a poster, a brochure, or some other non- written work. As a reminder, a power point presentation can be non-written, but in order to do that the slides should contain very few words and must be no less than 15 slides-each slide containing information that you will use in order to present your topic to the class.

(15 slides of paragraphs of writing do not count as non-written). (15 points) Part Three: The Presentation

You are to display your “Unwritten Component” to the class and explain to them what you created, why you created it (or chose that particular topic), what was/is it used for, what it means to Mi’kmaq culture and what it tells us about the Mi’kmaq people. (8 points)

Part Four-Profile a Maritime Mi’kmaq Community and of a Prominent Maritime Mi’kmaq

Here you will select from one of the Mi’kmaq communities below and one of the Mi’kmaq people below and create either a brochure (for the community) or a face book profile (for the person) on a large piece of construction paper.

First Folly First Nation Grand Chief Gabriel Sylliboy Requirements for Brochure:

The brochure must be neat and tidy with many pictures. As it is a brochure I would expect it to be filled with pictures and with information.

Information required for brochure:

1. Name of community 2. Location –with map 3. History of community 4. Cultural events and entertainment 5. Logo 6. Pictures associated with community 7. Interesting facts (at least 3)

Requirements for Facebook Profile

1. Name of person 2. Birth date (and where applicable date of death) 3. Relationship status 4. Friends list 5. Wall-with posts from people they would know 6. Graffiti 7. Basic Information 8. Contact Information 9. Personal Information (Interests, hobbies, activities, favorite music, T.V show, quotations “about me”) 10.Education and Work 11.Groups they would be members of.

You must have your profile set up in the same manner as a regular Facebook page. The information that you include will reflect the information that you will research.

I will provide you with 4 research classes and 2 work classes in class (this is 7.5 hours in class alone). If you are not prepared for the in class work it will be taken away and you will be expected to complete the work outside of class. I will have supplementary work for you to continue on.

I will not provide you with all of the material so I expect you to:

1. Complete all research during the research period and PRINT off or make notes of your topic to continue in class. You may also take books out from the library 2. Purchase the construction paper you will require and have it in class with whatever markers, colored pencils, glue, etc you will need for the construction. 3. Remain on task and complete all work 4. Divide work up between partners or group members-it does not make sense for both people t sit in front of a computer and look for research at the same time-have one person research one thing while the other person researches the other part of the project. 5. As you are aware of the project-if you can not complete your research in class you should research outside as well and bring your findings in class to continue working. 6. The point of the project is to also develop research skills-I will not give you the answers but guide you in your research. Mi’kmaq Project Proposal

Division of Labour

You must let me know who is responsible for what part of this project. It makes sense to divide the work up amongst the pairs in order to have all parts completed as outlined. I will not permit pairs to work on “each part” together as there are many tasks. Groups not working will have the class time taken and be provided with supplementary materials. The project will have to be completed outside of class time.

Project Part Responsible for… Student Name 1-300 word written 1. Research component 2. Write up 3. Bibliography 2-Unwritten 1. Connection to research Component in part 1 2. Visual component to aid presentation 3. Construction 4. Materials required to build in class
