1 Abstract
Philippe Delespaul is born in 1958 in Mol (Belgium) as second child of a family of 6 children. He studied clinical psychology, mathematical psychology and psychological methodology, as well as educational psychology and organizational psychology at the University of Louvain (B) and graduated in 1981. He is professor of Innovations in Mental Health at the University of Maastricht and Senior Advisor to the Board of the Mondriaan Mental Health Trust. He is a registered clinical psychologist in The Netherlands and Belgium and supervisor for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy.
Dr. Delespaul has always been involved in clinical practice, both as a clinician (at least 20 hours/week) and as a manager. He worked in different mental health services in Maastricht and Heerlen. Over the years he has headed several wards for patients suffering from severe mental illness. He developed innovative intensive care treatment facilities for severely ill backward patients. He initiated a patient care system for refractory patients using operant conditioning principles (Token Economy System) and is considered an expert in behavioral management principles for this group. He later studied different systems of care for severe mental disorders and headed diagnostic and treatment care facilities both in clinical and semi-mural settings. He is a specialist in diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from severe mental disorders and psychosis in particular. He is supervisor for clinical psychology and behavior and cognitive therapy and participates in the basic training of psychiatric nurses, psychologists, mental health specialists, medicine and psychiatry. In 2000 he was rewarded the ‘gouden sleutel’ (golden key) by the local mental health consumer organizations. In 2008 he, together with other members of the psychiatry department, received a special reward from the South Limburg consortium of consumers in psychiatry. Since 2000, he became instrumental in planning and implementing evidence based comprehensive regional mental health systems, integrating both clinical and community resources. In 2007 he became the Regional Clinical Manager for Integrated Care, an innovative care system that integrates F-ACT (function-Assertive Community Treatment embedded in the neighborhood), the emergency service, the regional psychiatric clinic, residential care facilities and sheltered work and living environments. He is in charge of care innovation and the quality of the services for a catchment area of 500.000 inhabitants. He is a founding board member of the CCAF (Centre for Certification of ACT and FACT) a quality control institute for mental health care in severe mental illness in The Netherlands and consults in the Netherlands and abroad in Mental Health service development. He is board member of F-ACT Nederland and of Werk2000. He worked as casemanager, consultant, psychotherapist and supervisor in the Maastricht ‘Psycope’ Mental Health Network. He developed a Cumulative Need for Care Monitor to generate important management information on treatment needs of the severe mentally ill. He is the author a large number of reports and papers that are used to modernize mental health systems in South Limburg and the Netherlands.
In additional to clinical work Dr. Delespaul has been involved in research in ecological psychiatry over the past 25 years. In ecological psychiatry, individuals are assessed over time and in different circumstances and changes in occurrence and severity of symptoms are understood in relation to (genetic) differences between individuals as well as contextual factors related to within patient variability. These person- environment interactions are considered signs of psychiatric illness. Dr Delespaul looked for cues of relevant etiological factors by assessing determinants of symptom variability between individuals and within individuals over time. His main interest is in severe mental health in general, and psychosis in particular. He started using ethological and behavioral observation techniques and applied statistical time based modeling in his clinical work with severely ill hospitalized mentally ill patients. Together with professor M. deVries he later introduced the Experience Sampling Methodology, a random time sampling procedure of mental state changes in natural environments, in psychiatric research. Dr. Delespaul standardized the methodology and his improvements are used internationally leading to more than 100 publications. In Maastricht he stimulated an ESM based research program within the Ecological Psychiatry division of the School for Mental Health and Neurosciences. He developed the PsyMate™ instrument and defined its PEAS™ specifications. The PsyMate™ is used in the data-collection in ecological mental health studies and developed the Psy4Health™ health care initiative. This has led to more than 10 PhD theses and a large number of international publications. Later he collaborated with Prof. J. van Os to integrate ecological en epidemiological techniques in a successful research program of Ecological and Genetic Interactions (EGI) that aims at untangling person-environment interactions. This subprogram currently hosts almost 20 PhD students and is chaired by Dr. Myin-Germeys.
2 Dr. Delespaul worked in the International Institute for Psychosocial Research as director for Ecological Psychiatry Research and the Consortium Centre for Public Mental Health. He has consulted for research projects of the European Commission, the World Federation of Mental Health, the World Psychiatric Association, the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute for Health (NIH) and the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH). He is Expert advisor for the Ministeries of Health in Belgium related to care innovation.
Dr. Delespaul has been involved in planning the curriculum and teaching at the Maastricht University, primarily in Medicine but also in supportive tasks at the faculty of Psychology and Mental Health Sciences. He was instrumental in the recent changes in the training and evaluation of future medical doctors by supplementing specific psychiatry skills in the traditional curriculum that focused on communication skills. He is a staff member of the Science Master for Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Maastricht. He also teaches behavior and cognitive therapy at the postgraduate training institute (RINO) and in the curriculum for clinical psychology. He is invited regularly at universities in the Netherlands and abroad.
Dr. Delespaul was trained as a computer system analyzer and programmer. He founded and headed the workgroup on computerized psychological assessment of the Flemish Association for Clinical Psychology. He consulted on issues of system analysis, database management and user interface development for a number of commercial and governmental institutes. He participated in the data management of large national and international multi-site collaborative research programs (for NWO, the European Commission and the National Institute of Mental Health). He developed software to support Experience Sampling Research using SEIKO, Timex and Casio watches and Palm based PDA’s. He developed the PEAS software for ecological assessments and is the co-inventor of the PsyMate™ device for daily life ported psychiatric treatments and assessments. He developed complex hierarchical databases for remote data entry (over the internet) and centralized management and archiving of collaborative research projects. He is a consultant for Electronic Patient File systems.
Dr. Delespaul has management responsibilities in research, clinical practice, education and university organization. He is the i) scientific director of the Knowledge Center for Integrated Mental Health Care and ii) senior staff member of the Ecological Psychiatry division of the School for Mental Health and NeuroSciences. He has headed different clinical facilities and participated in numerous Task Forces to innovate research, clinical practice and education. He has acted as a research reviewer for the European Commission and National Science Foundations in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, France, Canada and New Zealand.

Dr. Delespaul has been involved in research in ecological psychiatry over the past 25 years. Disfunctional person-environment interactions are considered signs of psychiatric illness. He developed the PsyMate™ that is used in the data-collection in ecological mental health studies and developed the Psy4Health™ health care initiative.
