Context The British Red Cross (BRC) helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and indi- vidual emergencies.

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emer- gencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.

Our success in making a difference to the communities in which we operate is dependent upon sufficient income generation to support and pay for our service delivery, both na- tionally and internationally.

The community fundraising team is a large geographically dispersed team consisting of paid staff along with hundreds of fundraising volunteers, raising funds through individuals, organisations and companies within the UK.

Scope Legacies are a vital source of income for the British Red Cross and the single largest net voluntary income stream.

The post holder will be responsible for managing legacy fundraising development and activ- ity and for ensuring effective communications are maintained at all times with relevant stake- holders.

Overall Purpose of Post To increase the number and value of legacies left in favour of the British Red Cross by increasing the number of those interested in leaving a legacy, converting those intending to do so and retaining those who have already done so.

Main Duties & Responsibilities 1. To plan, budget, lead and manage all aspects of legacy fundraising.

2. To support the fundraising manager and the legacy marketing manager in the devel- opment of a fully effective community legacy fundraising strategy.

To build relationships with all legacy prospects, both those generated by head office marketing activity and those achieved through community legacy promotion, and to achieve a high conversion rate of prospects to pledgers. This will include phone and letter communication combined with face-to-face and project visits.

4. To manage a stewardship programme for all legacy pledgers that will confirm their will intentions and offer them further opportunities to become more closely involved with the British Red Cross, with the aim of retaining their legacy gift and potentially in- creasing its value in future wills.

5. To work with the legacy marketing manager and the volunteering team to develop an appropriate strategy for accessing volunteer audiences, and to manage its imple- mentation.

6. To work with the Fundraising Manager and the community fundraising team to devel- op an appropriate strategy for accessing relevant community fundraising audiences.

7. To work with the Legacy Marketing Manager and the UK Services Team to develop an appropriate strategy for accessing service users, and to manage its implementa- tion.

8. To establish and manage relationships with key internal influencers, engaging staff and volunteers at all levels including: - Patrons - Presidents - Volunteer Chairs - UK Directors - Operations Directors

9. To identify and access potential external audiences and manage and deliver a pro- motional programme to convert them to legacy prospects.

10. To manage a number of legacy events throughout the year promoting legacy giving to carefully tailored audiences from both central and regional sources. This will in- clude all aspects of event management such as sourcing venues, invitation mailings, displays and catering, giving presentations, sourcing guest presenters and managing ongoing relationships with attendees.

11. To establish and manage relationships with regulated will-writing professionals such as solicitors, banks and accountants and work with them on will advice initiatives to promote BRC legacy giving.

12. To take the lead in raising internal awareness of the importance of legacy giving and empowering British Red Cross colleagues to participate in legacy promotion.

13. To work closely with Community Fundraisers and the Legacy Fundraisers in the oth- er three Territories in order to identify opportunities for legacy promotion and devel- opment.

14. To manage and work within the post-holder’s expenditure budget reporting back to the Fundraising Manager on a monthly basis.

15. To provide the Fundraising Manager with comprehensive monthly reporting on all activity including event management, the upgrading and downgrading of leads and number of contacts made, within the agreed framework.

2 16. To make and monitor applications for discretionary legacies.

17. To ensure accurate maintenance of legacy lead file data through regular and accur- ate updates in response to activity.

18. To undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Fundraising Manager.

19. To attend community fundraising meetings, events and training courses, potentially requiring overnight stays.

20. To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to work within the BRC’s equal opportunities and health and safety policies.

Special Able to travel around the region and stay overnight where appropriate Circum Holds a full drivers licence and able to use his/her own car for work-related travel stances (mileage will be reimbursed and use of hire cars is encouraged for longer journeys) Understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities policy and to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross
