A monthly summary of the Delaware County CONNECTION Intermediate Unit’s Meeting of the Board of Directors The Delaware County Intermediate Unit Board of Directors met on Board of Directors February 4, 2009. The following are highlights from the meeting:

John C. McMeekin, II  Received a report on the DCTS SkillsUSA Competition held at Aston on President February 3 from our student board representative, Brittany Hudak. DCTS students received four first place medals, two second place medals and one Edward J. Cardow third place medal for their hard work and success in numerous competition Vice President areas. The Folcroft competition was postponed until February 11 due to inclement weather. Maureen Carey Aaron Cubbage  Received a report from Keima Shariff, representing the Head Start Policy Nancy Galbraith Council. Head Start received a $1,000 grant for the Sharon Hill Early Donald Heller Childhood Learning Center library from PNC Bank due to the ongoing Philip R. Hopkins volunteer efforts of PNC executive John Gillespie. John Liberati Wanda Mann  Reviewed the proposed DCIU 2009-10 General Operating Budget. The Harry J. McElwee Board will be asked to take action at the March Board meeting. William Montgomery Dorothy Reed  DCIU received the 2008 Employer of Distinction Award from the Kimberly Robinson Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians. DCIU was recognized for Richard Sonntag leadership in providing job opportunities for immigrants and helping them to William Wilkinson gain valuable experience in the American workplace. Lawrence O’Shea, Ph.D. Executive Director  Announced the DCTS Licensed Practical Nursing Program Graduation on February 12, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Interboro High School. Thomas C. Brown Treasurer, Nonmember  Approved the purchase of Playland International Adventure series composite play structure for the Head Start playground at Columbus Theresa Hammond Elementary School in the Chester Upland School District. Purchase is Secretary, Nonmember pending approval of the Chester Upland School District and funding is being provided by the HSSAP and federal grant. Michael V. Puppio, Jr. Solicitor  Approved a contract with SUNESYS to install fiber optic cable and equipment to Head Start sites in Yeadon, Chester Township, Adriene M. Irving Rockbourne Falls, Madison Street, Marcus Hook and Woodlyn. The Editor contract is contingent upon receiving e-rate funding and approval from Head Start Region III Office and DCIU Solicitor.

 Authorized the Board Secretary to seek nominations for Intermediate Unit Board membership from the Chichester, Penn-Delco, Rose Tree Media, Upper Darby and Wallingford-Swarthmore School Districts for the term July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2012. 200 Yale Ave. Morton, PA 19070  Recognized the STARS recipients for the month of February 2009, listed 610-938-9000 on the following page. www.dciu.org  Next meeting: March 4, 2009. Congratulations to the following STARS for February 2009:

Rhoda Burrell (nominated by Carmen Henderson) Ms. Burrell takes full control and charge of any activities, circumstances and services that she can support and/or assist with in the Project ELECT Program in the Chester Upland, William Penn, Interboro and Upper Darby School Districts. Ms. Burrell schedules, coordinates and plans activites for the TEEN Program. She is always willing to assist all of Project ELECT staff in addition to carrying out her own responsibilities. She has trained new ELECT staff and has overseen the ELECT program in the absence of the program coordinator since September 2008. Ms. Burrell represents the ELECT staff at the Employee Engagement Council meetings and she goes out to different organizations in Delaware County to retrieve any materials or additional services for the TEEN Parent Program. She also coordinates workshops for the ELECT students and she organized the Adopt -a-Teen holiday celebration held for the students. She attends trainings and seminars which provide the updates and guidelines required by the state of Pennsylvania. Ms. Burrell is dedicated and committed to the teen parents in the ELECT program; they really reach out to her for support and wisdom. She has been employed by DCIU for eight years and has held several positions in the ELECT program. She is a team player, role model, experienced and educated STAR who deserves the honor of being recognized for her devotion.

Rosemary DiBello (nominated by Jocelyn Clark, Casey Bauer, Susan Beadle, Gena Camoosa, SaraFrascella) Rosemary DiBello goes above and beyond the call of duty to help fellow colleagues and families. She acts as liaison to staff and supervisors and researches to find solutions when problems arise. She helps to create a harmonious and inviting work environment. She is a team player and asks for input before making team decisions. She is very knowledgeable on IU policy and is willing to research to find answers if she doesn’t know. She does an amazing job of juggling the responsibilities that ARE her job and those that are perceived to BE her job by the staff and families she works with at Sharon Hill. She is a compassionate listener and puts in personal time to get things done. Rosemary is a team player and is constantly thinking of others.
