HOVINGTON FAMILY GROUPS
Introduction A “family group” consists of one or more (quite often just one!) related individuals. The arrangement here is by country in alphabetical order. England is further subdivided by county from Berkshire to Yorkshire. (I have used a mixture of modern and old county names in an arbitrary way to suit my own convenience). Canada is subdivided by province and Australia and the United States by state.
Inevitably as a result of moving around people do not always fit into nice neat county (or national) categories. Therefore under many counties/nations there is listed an ‘Other’ category which is a cross- reference to members of other family groups who have a link to that place mentioned.
Non-Hovington descendents of Hovingtons are included where known. The listing includes most variant spellings (eg Huffington, Hovinton), but usually excludes the Ovington name. My Ovington data is currently very patchy and its inclusion here would probably confuse rather than enlighten. (A few Ovingtons are included where there are definite links to Hovingtons or areas where Hovingtons are commonly found)
The largest family group is Yorkshire Family Group #1 This has nearly 300 names, of which about one-third are actually called Hovington, and spans nearly 500 years. It is also possible to identify children, i.e. #1 Robert, born 1588/1589, son of Richard & Katherine. Married Mary Stevenson, 27th June 1624. #2 Robert, born 1620/1621, son of Christopher. Married Jane Casse, 23rd Oct 1649 Children: Jane, born 1653; John, born 1656 A Robert Hovington was a juryman at Hutton Bushell, 5th Oct 1622. This would have to be one of the first two Roberts, for age reasons. Another Robert was a juryman at Helmsley. The date of this is unclear, but is probably 1650s, and therefore could be either of the first three Roberts. Mary, wife of Robert, died in 1657 – this would appear to be Mary nee Stevenson Difficulties arise with the death of Robert Hovington in 1658 – this could be any of the four, who would have been aged unknow, 70, 38, and 1 respectively. A Robert was recorded on Brompton hearths tax in 1673, and was a Brompton juryman in 1678. These dates fit the second Robert best (he would have been in his mid 50s). The second Robert would have been 85 and 90 – surely a 90 year old wouldn’t have served on a jury! The fourth Robert can be discounted as he was only a teenager. An Elizabeth, dau of Robert, died in 1676. Again, it would seem highly probable that this was the third Robert. If, as seems reasonable, the third Robert was alive in the 1670s, then this narrows the death in 1658 to one of the three other Roberts.

A tremendous country blues musician who was singing vividly and playing with flair well after the genre's heyday, Franklin “Frank” Hovington started on ukulele and banjo as a child. He teamed with William Walker in the late '30s and '40s playing at house parties and dances in Frederica, Pennsylvania. Hovington moved to Washington D.C. in the late '40s, and backed such groups as Stewart Dixon’s Golden Stars and Ernest Ewin’s Jubilee Four. He also worked with Billy Stewart’s band. Hovington moved to Delaware in 1967, then was recorded by Flyright in 1975. His '75 LP was a masterpiece, and alerted many in the blues community to his abilities.
