Social Studies- Detailed Lesson Plan Unit 2 Lesson 1

Objectives: to identify the first people to settle in Pennsylvania; to identify the Delawares as the first group of Native Americans to settle in Pennsylvania; to describe why the Delaware people settled and how they lived

Standards: 7.1.6.B; 7.2.6.A; 7.2.6.B; 8.1.6.A; 8.2.6.A; 8.2.6.C

Materials: pretest, laptop or computer lab access, WebQuest Activity; Unit 2 Social Studies packet; Unit 2 Lesson 1 review sheet

Procedure: Day 1 (30 to 45 minutes)  Students will first complete the pretest.  In groups of 2, students will complete the webquest activity as an introduction to the Delaware tribe.  Review the answers that students located using the internet.

Day 2 (30 to 45 minutes)  Create a model of the Bering Strait Land Bridge using sand and ice. Let the ice melt to show how the land bridge would disappear after the ice age. (You may have to check back later in the day.)  Students will read lesson 1 of the packet in small groups.  Students will complete the review sheet.  Review the answers. Discuss any key points.

Day 3 and 4 (30 to 45 minutes each session)  Review key terms using slates and markers.  In small groups, students will create a model of a Delaware tribe wigwam using any available materials.  Along with their wigwam, students must present facts that detail where and how the Delaware tribe lived. Students may present these facts using a poster, pamphlet, or PowerPoint presentation.
