Accepted methods of estimating numbers of participants for large events:

1. For smaller crowds (less than 50), each participant can be counted. Use tick marks for each person.

2. To count participants in groups greater than 50 or when large groups participate at different intervals for a longer event, please derive an estimate by using the following method.

Count the number of participants in 10-minute intervals several times (at least one time each hour) throughout the event. Use tick marks and document the interval times in the spaces provided in the chart on page 1 of this form. Average the number of participants for the 10-minute intervals by totaling the numbers of participants counted and dividing by the number of 10-minute intervals you counted. Multiply that average by the number of 10- minute intervals for the event as a whole (a three-hour event would have 18 10-minute intervals) to get an estimate of the total number of participants.
