Responsible for: Class group of children with ASD/SCD/Challenging Behaviour

Role Purpose and Role Dimensions: 1. To implement the curriculum in accordance with the school’s philosophy and policies.

2. To teach the full range of subjects using a highly differentiated approach to ensure that all young people receive access to the full range of the National Curriculum

3. To produce education plans, and forecasts, together with weekly planning as in the Curriculum Policy.

4. To lead on teaching and learning within school in specific areas as designated by the Headteacher.

5. To display a total commitment to the education and welfare of the pupils by ensuring that relevant and up to date teaching and learning strategies are implemented.

6. To maintain the educational, physical, emotional and social care of the young people

7. To be familiar with relevant whole school policies and implement within school.

8. Such other areas of responsibility which may reasonably be required as the needs of the school continue to develop

Duties and responsibilities of the post may change over time as requirements and circumstances change. The person in the post may also be required to carry out such other duties as may be necessary from time to time.

This job description is to be performed in accordance with the provisions of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and within the range of teachers’ duties set out in that document as relevant to the post holder’s title and salary point. Financial Dimensions: The post holder will be responsible for maintaining the budget for the allocated curriculum area.

Other Considerations: Whilst there are some statemented pupils in mainstream schools, the environment in a special school is far more intense and continuously presents a variety of challenging situations for staff at all levels

3 Key Accountabilities and Key Elements: Result Areas: Support for Pupils This will involve: Core Duties Carry out the core duties of a Teacher at Coleby Court, including the co- ordination of a curriculum subject area.

- To make an initial assessment of core subjects for each new arrival and to reassess within statutory time scales or as needed for compilation of reports for reviews and conferences.

- To develop an Individual Education Plan, Behaviour Support Plan, Risk Assessment for each of the pupils to meet their individual needs according to their Statements of Special Educational Need.

- To work with the school team to develop and implement behavioural, social and communication individualised strategies to improve the social functioning of each pupil.

- To deliver clear teaching objectives and understand the sequence of teaching and learning and communicate this to pupils.

- To develop and maintain clear and detailed records and to monitor and assess the progress of individual pupils.

Additional Duties  Use pupil data to co-ordinate strategies to improve attainment for individuals and year groups.  Use evaluation of curriculum developments to ensure all pupils are accessing relevant and engaging learning opportunities

Management of other staff - To line manage teaching assistants in the class team.

- To work closely with parents and all professionals including therapists, carers and social workers, to ensure delivery of a multidisciplinary approach.

Support for the Curriculum This will involve: Core Duties Carry out the core duties of a Teacher at Beckmead / Coleby Court, including the co-ordination of a curriculum subject area.

Additional Duties  To ensure Schemes of Work and subject policies are up to date and regularly reviewed  Co-ordinate, review and develop the curriculum plans for designated subject area across the school.  Carry out regular moderation and teaching assessment for class group so as to have reliable progress data.  Use data about pupil attainment across the curriculum to inform decisions about intervention programmes for individual pupils in key subjects

4 Support for the School Core Duties  To write reports and attend meetings as required.

 To take part in in-service training and maintain professional development and review as required

 To ensure that the teaching areas and equipment are maintained to a high standard of safety and tidiness

 To ensure that, in conjunction with the Head Teacher, the teaching areas are resourced to the highest possible standard

 To comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting concerns to an appropriate person

 To support constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, to support achievement and progress of pupils.

 To delivering out of school learning activities within guidelines established by the school.

Green Statement This will involve:

. Seeking opportunities for contributing to sustainable development of the borough, in accordance with the Council’s Green Commitment. In particular, demonstrating good environmental practice (such as energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials, sustainable transport, recycling and waste reduction) in management of the service provision.

Data Protection This will involve:

. Being aware of the Council’s responsibilities under the Data Protection Act 1984 for the security, accuracy and relevance of personal data held on such systems and ensure that all administrative and financial processes comply with this. . Maintaining client records and archive systems, in accordance with departmental procedure, policy and statutory requirements

Confidentiality This will involve:

. Being expected to treat all information acquired through your employment, both formally and informally, in strict confidence. There are strict rules and protocols defining employees’ access to and use of the council’s databases. Any breach of these rules and protocols will be regarded as subject to disciplinary investigation. There are internal procedures in place for employees to raise matters of concern regarding such issues as bad practice or mismanagement.

Essential knowledge: . Knowledge of current educational developments and legislation, particularly in relation to pupils with special educational needs in particular ASD/SCD and challenging behaviour . Knowledge and understanding of the principles of assessment and effective record-keeping and their use to promote the educational and personal development of the pupil . Knowledge and understanding of the effective use of ICT in the organisation and management of their role . Understanding of the use of data to inform planning and decision-making.

Essential skills and . Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent. . Recognise importance of on-going professional development as shown by abilities: undertaking recent / relevant training . Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing . Be an exemplar of excellent classroom practice . Ability to respond flexibly to changing circumstances . Essential experience: . Experience of working in a range of school settings . Experience of delivering a differentiated curriculum to pupils with a wide range of needs . Experience of working with pupils with ASD/SCD and challenging behaviour with in mainstream or specialist settings . Experience of managing a budget . Experience of leading a class team

Special conditions: . Enhanced CRB Check. . Above average exposure to pupils with traumatic, degenerative, terminal conditions, or who have difficult and demanding behavioural problems, will require the postholder to cope with above average levels of emotional stress. . Close contact with pupils will result in some exposure to bodily fluids. . Will require Hepatitis B vaccination. . Particularly in schools that have pupils with behavioural difficulties, postholder can be at risk of physical injury and needs to remain vigilant and observe risk assessment protocols.
