OPERATOR III DAWSON COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS Full-Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to construct and maintain county roads and drainage systems, and for the Transfer Station. MAJOR DUTIES

· Operate heavy equipment to redistribute dirt, prepare roads for paving, and clear right of-ways. · Operate a track load truck and move dirt. · Operate a rubber tire loader to load truck and move dirt and pipe. · Operate a backhoe to dig ditches, lay pipe, and clear drainage systems. · Operate a motor grader to grade county roads and set base prior to paving, scrape snow, & grade ditches. · Operate a tractor with bush hog to clear and maintain right-of-ways. · May operate a traffic roller and steel wheel roller to assist in the laying of asphalt and plant mix. · Operate a tar patching machine to repair paved roads. · May operate a lowboy to transport equipment. · Operate a dump truck to haul dirt, gravel, and stumps. · Perform daily checks of oil and fluid levels and tires on equipment and machinery; performs minor repairs as needed. · Check bridges and pipes for damage after rain. · Perform duties such as repairing and erecting signs, cleaning pipes, and flagging traffic. · Operate a tar truck to tack road before putting down asphalt. · May operate a water truck to assist in the laying of asphalt. · May operate an asphalt distributor to construct, maintain, and improve road systems. · Remove debris and trees from roads after storms; operate a chainsaw to clear trees from right-of-ways. · Patch holes in roads using asphalt. · Performs other related duties as assigned. 2

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITY

KNOWLEDGE OF:  County policies and procedures pertaining to road and drainage system maintenance and repair.  Techniques for achieving grade, drainage, and proper compaction.  Road construction and maintenance techniques.  Department and safety rules and regulations.

SKILL IN  Operating such equipment as a dump truck, lowboy, motor grader, pan, track loader, rubber tire loader, backhoe, roller, asphalt distributor, and bulldozer.  Dealing with the public.  Verbal and written communication.

ABILITY TO:  Read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.  Perform some heavy lifting.

GUIDELINES State Department of Transportation road maintenance and traffic guidelines, county and department policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. CONTACTS  Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public.  Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide service. ADA MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Scope of Performance: The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment to construct and maintain county roads and drainage systems. Successful performance helps ensure safe and serviceable roads and drainage systems. Physical Ability: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping; and the employee must be able to stand long periods of time. The employee is frequently required to lift light and heavy objects, up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally, climb ladders and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Environmental Factors: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as mask, goggles, or gloves. 3

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY The Road Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instruction. The work is spot-checked for compliance with instructions and procedures accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  Applicant must be 18 years of age or older.  Applicant must have ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations; high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.  Ability to read, writes, and performs basic mathematical calculations.  Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had similar position for one to two years.  Applicant must have possession of a class A license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).  Must have a minimum of 2-4 years motor grading experience.  Applicant must pass a background check and drug screening.
