West Forsyth High School Band 2011-12 Course Expectations

What to bring to class:

 Instrument in working condition (extra reeds, valve oil, moving slides, mouthpiece, etc.)  Music and Etude Books distributed by Mr. Kirkpatrick  Pencil with eraser

Daily participation 40%: Participation is required for all classes at West Forsyth High School including band. Participation includes behavior, positive attitude and willingness to cooperate. Outstanding participation will result in outstanding grades (A or B). Average participation will result in average grades (B or C). Below average participation will result in below average grades (D or F).

Performance and rehearsal attendance 30%: A major function and purpose of the band is to perform. Therefore, a large part of your grade will be weighted on performances. Concert Band is required to wear black pants or skirt, dark shoes and socks and the official Green Band Polo issued by the band. Symphonic Band will wear tux pants/black vest/bowtie or black dress issued by the band. Wind Ensemble will wear tux pants, black jacket, black bowtie or Concert Dress issued by the band. All bands are required to wear dark dress shoes and dark socks. So long as students attend and participate in the concert wearing appropriate concert dress they will receive a '100' for performance attendance.

Assignments 30%:

Student Info Assignment Students are required to complete the student information form located on Mr. Kirkpatrick's teacher website.

Scales/Rudiments Assignment Each student will be responsible for learning the NC Honors Band required scales/rudiments, including the chromatic scale. The scales correspond with grade levels so be careful which sheet you use. Students will individually play each of the scales/rudiments to be graded using the WFHS Instrumental Music Performance Rubric.

Rhythm Reduction and Analysis Assignment Students will complete a rhythm reduction of music being rehearsed with full analysis.

Intonation Tendencies Chart Assignment Students will complete an intonation tendency chart to demonstrate the unique pitch issues for their particular instrument as well as thorough understanding of pitch relation in harmonic structures.

Concert Preparations Students will prepare to perform at a concert. Please refer to website for calendar.
