BVE Library Skills & Activities January 9-13, 2017 Grade K Bell Ringer and Anticipatory Set: Today, you will take the Early STAR Literacy test. Why would you want to do your best on this test? Objectives: Students will take the Early STAR Literacy test. Anticipatory Set: Today, you will take the Early STAR Literacy test. Procedures: Teacher input: The teacher will give the students basic directions to log on to the test and to take the test. The teacher will assist students logging into the test as needed. Assessment: Students will complete the Early STAR Literacy test. Note: While I am out testing students in the computer lab, Mrs. Hartfield will read the first page of Mississippi Alphabet by Laurie Parker. She will then show the students a picture of an azalea flower. She will then summarize the book called The Secret World of Walter Anderson. If time allows, she will then read the non-fiction book called Amazing Armadillos. Grades 1-3 Bell Ringer and Anticipatory Set: Today, you will take the STAR reading test. Why would you want to do your best on this test? Objectives: Students will take the STAR reading test. Anticipatory Set: Today, you will take the STAR reading test. Procedures: Teacher input: The teacher will give the students basic directions to log on to the test and to take the test. The teacher will assist students logging into the test as needed. Assessment: Students will complete the STAR reading test. Closure: Next week, students will receive their new AR reading levels; and they will check out books according to these reading levels. Grade 4 Note: While I am testing students in the computer lab, Mrs. Hartfield will give students their new AR levels. Students will then have extra time to select their library books and to read silently. Grades 5 Bell Ringer and Anticipatory Set: Raise your hand if you have heard of Walter Anderson? What did he do? Did anyone visit the Walter Anderson museum? Objectives: Students will actively listen to a story called The Secret World of Walter Anderson, Procedures: Teacher input: The teacher will ask the students to actively listen to the answers to the following questions: What did he draw? Where did he live? To which island did he row? Why was it difficult to live on the island? What animals lived on the island? What did he use for shelter on the island? Who were his friends? Why did he paint? If time allows, students will goggle the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in order to answer the following questions: What were the names of Walter’s brothers? What type of art did they do? When was Walter born? When did Walter die? Closure: Can you relate this book to your own life? Or can you relate Walter Anderson’s story to another artist?

Class format for Grades 1-5: 1. The lesson takes the first 15-20 minutes of the class period. 2. Book selection takes the next 15 minutes. Call one table at a time to get their markers. 3. The next 10 minutes is silent reading at their assigned seats or elsewhere. NOTES: K-1st graders can check out one book. Grades 2-5 can check out two books.
