Class Confirmation Registration is confirmed by your payment of the course fee when you return the registration form. NO registration is complete until fees are paid. You will not receive a confirmation notice.

Class Cancellations The Rapid City Area Schools determines the cancellation of a class due to insufficient enrollment. You will be notified and your money refunded.

Cancellations Due To Weather When the Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) are closed due to inclement weather, Professional Growth classes are also cancelled.

To Cancel a Registration To ensure a full refund you must call (605) 394-4067 and withdraw from the class ten days prior to the first session of class. If you withdraw from the class less than 10 days prior to the first class session, you will forfeit your RCAS fee.

Each course description includes a section for Target Group(s) and Lane Change Status for Rapid City Area School (RCAS) employees only. Target Group(s) indicate the group the instructor had in mind when designing the class. Lane Change Status indicates the individuals who, upon successful completion of the class, will be granted credit for lane change. Refer to the negotiated agreement for lane change criteria.

Career Enhancement Career Enhancement applies to Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) classified employees only. Professional Growth classes pre-approved for Career Enhancement credit are identified in this flyer. RCAS classified staff members do not need to send in the Career Enhancement Application Form before taking a class that has been pre-approved for Career Enhancement. All other classes must be approved by the RCAS Office of Curriculum and Instruction prior to taking the class.

5 Caution: The instructor may change the name of a class. In that instance, we try to list the previous titles for your reference. It is your responsibility to make sure you are not taking the same class twice. A course may only count one time toward a lane change. Lane change status cannot be awarded twice for the same class with different titles.

Upon completion of a class, participants are strongly encouraged to keep all documents.

PAYMENT PROCEDURE

1. The prices reflect the TOTAL (blue) cost for the type of credit listed. When taking a class from a university/college for undergraduate or graduate credit and paying by check, two checks are required with the exception of University of Sioux Fall: (a.) The first fee (red) listed in parentheses needs to be made out to the university/college. (b.) The second fee (black) listed in the parentheses needs to be made out to Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS). This fee is required for all classes, but due to grant funding or the adjustment of the instructor’s schedule, the RCAS fee may be returned to the participant upon completion of the class. 2. RCAS does not accept credit cards for the RCAS fee. 3. Augustana College, University of Sioux Falls, and University of South Dakota accept credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) for payment of college credit. Black Hills State University no longer accepts credit cards.

RCAS TEACHER EVALUATION SYSTEM CLASSES

Student Learning Objectives is a required component for the updated Rapid City District Teacher Evaluation System.

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES South Dakota Department of Education Division of Learning & Instruction

Target Group: school administrators and all certified staff Lane Change Status: all certified staff Date: Elementary: July 14, 15, 2014 Date: Secondary: July 24, 25, 2014 Time: 8:00am – 4:00pm Location: Corral Drive Elementary and Southwest Middle School Cost: no fee – RCAS teachers will receive a stipend for attendance.

This is a required component for the new Rapid City District Teacher Evaluation System. For this training, teachers will be grouped by grade-level and content area.

Day 1: Orientation to Student Learning Objectives as a Measure of Teacher Effectiveness Day 1 will provide teachers with an orientation to Student Learning Objectives (SLO) and how they are used to encourage data-driven instruction. Teachers will gain an understanding of the SLO process, learn how to identify appropriate assessments, work together to analyze student data, and practice writing quality SLOs.

Day 2: Selecting or Creating Assessments to Establish and Assess Student Learning Objectives

7 Day 2 is designed for teachers who do not have access to pre-made benchmark assessments. This facilitated SLO work session allows teachers to work collaboratively with teachers in similar subjects and grade levels to create assessments that can be used during the Student Learning Objectives process.

This course is for educators who are interested in the role classroom discussions play in deepening students’ mathematical understanding and learning. Through readings, videos, discussions, and activities, participants will explore why talk is critical to learning and how productive math talk can be fostered. Knowledge gained from this study will assist educators in understanding and teaching to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice.

This course will help participants build a foundation of algebra in the elementary grades. Participants will examine algebraic thinking with an emphasis on how arithmetic and algebra are taught and learned. Conceptions and misconceptions elementary students bring to mathematics will be analyzed. Strategies for promoting algebraic thinking will be practiced. Participants will also examine topics related to equality, rational thinking, conjectures, variables, patterns and functions.

This class counts toward a K-12 Math Specialist endorsement.

A balance of objective evaluation and student-centered observation will provide a strong basis for ongoing progress monitoring for literacy achievement.

Participants will examine units to determine essential learning and create clear learning targets that align with the CCSS. Instructional roadmaps for one or more of the units will be developed, embedded assessment practices will be explored, and resources for differentiation through conferring and small group work will be studied.

Participants will build on the basics of ActivInspire and create student interactive flipcharts. Topics will include assessing with learning response systems, engaging students with dual pens (ActivArena), and using flipcharts beyond whole-group instruction. The objectives of this workshop are to strengthen interactive instructional approaches and to provide time to develop a portfolio of ActivInspire resources.

Requirement: A basic level of experience with ActivInspire is required for this course.

This class will explore more than a dozen apps to help participants become more efficient in their personal and professional lives. Most apps will be cross platform (phones and tablets), available for Android devices and iPhone/iPad, and are free (or have free versions). Once located, making them accessible to students can be a challenge. This course will help participants locate, organize, and distribute all of the great resources available. All tools are web-based and resources will be accessible with Internet access.

This course, the final installment in the Deadwood series, takes us further into Deadwood history discussing such topics as railroading in the area, Chinatown, plus historical research and preservation. Participants will visit the first gold strike, Days of ’76 Museum, the Mickelson and Whitewood Creek Trails and all the history along the way. This class involves a lot of walking.

13 This course will focus primarily on the Native people of South Dakota and the long-standing relationship between Native people/tribes and the United States government. Current cultural issues including values, family structure, legends, economics, government policies, treaties, and related areas will be presented. Participants will also engage in discussions dealing with stereotypes and the process of addressing stereotypes within the classroom setting. The course will prepare participants to teach more effectively.

This course fulfills the 3 credit hour Indian Studies requirement for South Dakota teacher certification.

This is the second, and final, class on the history of the Lead area. This class will focus on the area’s gold mining industries including the Homestake and Wharf Mines. Participants will learn additional information about the history of Central City and Lead. Through the use of on-site building tours, cemetery studies, railroads, and hands-on gold panning techniques, participants will be introduced to the fascinating history of the Lead area. Become familiar with the legal system and law enforcement of early Deadwood and its effects on the growth of the community. Participants will gain knowledge of some of the more notorious gunslingers who walked the streets of old Deadwood along with the “highwaymen” and stage messengers who were active on the Cheyenne to Deadwood stage route. Participants will have the opportunity to walk in their footsteps and hear the true stories of Sam Bass (The Scourge of Texas), D. Boone May, Prescott Webb, James Butler Hickok, Con Stapleton, Johnny Varnes, Charley Storms, Butch Cassidy (Harry Longabough), “Turkey Creek” Jack Johnson, and Harvey “Flatnose” Logan and the “Wild Bunch”, all who walked the streets of Deadwood. Participants will be introduced to the colorful history of early Deadwood, Dakota Territory, during the rough and tumble days of the gold camps. Through the use of museum studies, living history presentations and on-site tours, participants will develop a working knowledge of the famous and not-so famous inhabitants of “Deadwood Gulch”. This workshop involves a series of lectures about important historical and military sites, characters, events, and forms of mining that were important to the development of South Dakota state history. The objective of this course is to provide staff development and additional professional growth to teachers or history buffs interested in Black Hills history. The Rapid City Area Schools works collaboratively with Black Hills State University to provide a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in math education.
