Welcome to AP Chemistry

Mrs. A. Baldwin

The course work in AP chemistry is very challenging and requires a mature, motivated, self- disciplined, hard working student. There will be homework assigned every day and there will be numerous reading, writing, lab and other assignments each week. In addition, the student will be expected to spend at least five hours a week in unsupervised individual study.

This Summer Assignment will be collected for a grade the first day of school. Your name and the answers to the fifty multiple choice questions should be recorded in pencil on the scantron form. The following questions from the AP Chemistry textbook are also due the first day of school and are based on information covered in Regents Chemistry. These should be completed on separate paper.

You will need to come in and sign out an AP Chemistry Textbook at Frontier High School Room 233 one of the following dates and times: Monday June 3rd through Friday June 7 th 7:15 to 2:30 Monday June 10 th to Friday June 14th 7:15 to 2:30 Monday June 17th to Friday June 21th 7:15 to 2:30 Monday June 24th 7:15 to 2:30 Wednesday June 26th 7:15 to 2:30

In the textbook, read and take notes on chapters 1, 2 and 3. Look at the diagrams and read through the problems and examples. You will not understand everything but most of it is review of material taught in Regents Chemistry.

These problems should be completed on separate paper:

Chapter 1: pages 31 to 35; Problems 1.20, 1.25, 1.27, 1.29, 1.31, 1.46, 1.49, 1.95 Memorize the prefixes Table 1.3 on page 11 in the textbook

Chapter 2: Pages 69 to 73; Problems 2.19, 2.25, 2.26, 2.29, 2.41, 2.43, 2.45, 2.53, 2.61, 2.63, 2.66 Memorize the formulas, names and charges on the ions listed on page 58 Table 2.2, Page 59 Table 2.3, page 62 Table 2.5. Memorize the prefixes on page 61 Table 2.4 Memorize the names of the acids and their anions on page 64 Table 2.6.

Chapter 3: Pages 110 to 113; problems 3.37, 3.41, 3.53, 3.74, 3.75, 3.77, 3.83, 3.98

From the Chemistry Regents Reference Tables: memorize the solubility rules from Table F Solubility Guidelines for Aqueous Solutions.

After reviewing the material in chapters 1, 2 and 3, complete the 50 multiple choice questions and put your name and your answers on the scantron form in pencil.

The Advanced Placement Chemistry course is designed to replace the first chemistry course usually taken in the first year of college by science majors. Taking AP Chemistry in high school can allow students to take second year chemistry courses as freshmen or to register for courses that require General Chemistry as a prerequisite. Taking AP Chemistry also frees time for other courses to be taken in college. The AP Chemistry course at Frontier is designed to be taken after the completion of a Regents Chemistry course. The course work in AP chemistry is very challenging and requires a mature, motivated, self-disciplined, hard working student. There will be numerous reading, writing, lab and homework assignments each week. In addition, the student will be expected to spend at least five hours a week in unsupervised individual study. AP Chemistry will meet for 40 minutes and for 80 minutes on alternating days of the four-day cycle. There will be labs to complete each week and lab write-ups will be due the day after the lab is assigned. 50% per day will be deducted for late labs. Chemistry professors at some institutions ask to see a record of the laboratory work done by an Advanced Placement student before granting credit, therefore, it is important that the student keep a well-organized and complete lab notebook. The AP exam is a three-hour exam, divided into two parts, given in May. All students enrolled in AP Chemistry are expected to take the AP Exam. Review classes for the AP exam will be held after school beginning in March. Students may also be able to gain college credit through Erie Community College. Additional information about fees and the exam will be forthcoming.

General class rules- Be Prompt - You are expected to be to class on time. Be Prepared - You are expected to bring your text book, three ring binder, calculator and a pen or pencil to class every day. A #2 pencil is required on test days. Labs should be completed in pencil. Be Polite - You are expected to act in a courteous and respectful manner to others. Activities not allowed in the classroom include eating, drinking, brushing hair, use of cell phones or iPods etc. Be Productive - AP Chemistry is a challenging course. To succeed, you must work hard all year.

Grading - Report card grades are determined from a combination of the grades from labs, lab quizzes, lecture tests, lecture quizzes, homework assignments and projects, lab technique and safety, and class participation. Grade breakdown: Tests are 70%, Quizzes 20%, and Lab is 20%. Any work turned in late will be downgraded 50% per day. A midterm exam will be given during exam week in January and counts as two test grades on second quarter. The standardized ACS Exam will be given the beginning of June and the final exam in AP Chemistry is given in June during exam week.

Remember, I am here to help you learn and I will be available to help you before school, during the school day and after school if you have a problem. Please do not hesitate to see me if you are having trouble.
