Then, answer the questions and turn in a hard copy by the due date. If a hard copy is not turned in, there will be a deduction unless you are absent. 1. A young dog has rolled into some anthrax and has spread it to some people. What would you use to take care of the anthrax problem? (You may not kill the puppy; you do not need to discuss the people because thanks to the puppy, those infected have already died.) 4. A sick cat has had its skin/fur exposed to 1X109 cells of several Clostridium species. Its respiratory & digestive systems are not affected, so antibiotics are not needed. The vet treated the cat for 1 minute with the recommended dilution of chlorine bleach and then rinsed it off with water. Even after treatment, you find the cat is covered with cat vomit and dandruff. Name and describe four reasons why bleaching the cat likely failed.

5. Explain if giving the cat a hydrogen peroxide bath with the recommended dilution will work.

6. Although heavy metals were the first antibacterial agents discovered by Ehrlich, they are essentially no longer used. Explain three reasons why (you will have to critically think on the third reason).

7. Someone brings you a priceless antique clock that has been exposed to large numbers of Mycobacterium leprae. They will display it in their house after treatment. Without damaging the clock (with water, heat, or caustic agents) how would you sterilize it? Why?

8. Someone brings you a cutting board made of common plastic that has had one side exposed to low numbers of Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram positive bacteria. Without destroying it with heat (such as boiling water), how would you sterilize it? Why? 9. The child that contaminated the clock with Mycobacterium leprae is also contaminated. Upon examination, the child’s orifices are uncontaminated, there is no internal infection, and there is no broken skin, so antibiotics are not needed. How would you treat the child’s skin? Why?

10. Betadine and other iodine related compounds are often used in hospitals on patients. Explain why using three independent reasons.

11. Skim chapter 8 before answering these next two questions. (You do not need to read it, but look it over and read the chapter summary.) Briefly discuss what is Recombinant DNA technology?

12. Name ten of the tools and techniques of Recombinant DNA technology and in a few sentences, briefly describe what they are.
