Course Number and Title: OAT 121 Keyboarding
Prerequisite: ENG 006 or ENG 007, MAT 005, SSC 100 or concurrent
Course Credits and Hours: 4 credits 3 lecture hours/week 2 lab hours/week
Course Description: This course develops touch control of the keyboard and proper keyboarding techniques and builds basic speed and accuracy. Students use word processing software to format letters, reports, tables, memos, and related business communications.

Core Course Performance Objectives (CCPOs):
Using computer software, create, format, and print documents suitable for mailing. (CCC 2; PGC 1, 3) Input text and numbers using the keyboard. (PGC 1, 2) Plan, create, edit, and complete assigned word processing tasks such as letters, reports, tables, memos, and related business communications. (CCC 2, 5; PGC 1, 3) Identify professional standards and ethical conduct as prescribed by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). (CCC 4; PGC 3)
See Core Curriculum Competencies and Program Graduate Competencies at the end of the syllabus. CCPOs are linked to every competency they develop. Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs): Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Using computer software, create, format, and print documents suitable for mailing.
Create and center text vertically and horizontally.
Revise and correct typographical errors.
Prepare memos suitable for distribution.
Construct business letters suitable for mailing.
2. Input text and numbers using the keyboard.
Practice keyboarding by touching the letter, numbers, figures, and symbol keys with acceptable techniques.
Use manipulative parts of a keyboard such as the tab key, tab clear, tab set, margin stops, space bar, and shift keys.
Design and keyboard tables.
3. Plan, create, edit, and complete assigned word processing tasks such as letters, reports, tables, memos, and related business communications.
Construct and keyboard business letters in block and modified-block and single-page and multi- page formats.
Prepare and keyboard one-page simple reports and multi-page reports with enumerations, indentations, and pagination.
Create and edit memos.
Use proofreader’s marks to critique and edit documents.
Construct, modify, and sort tables.
4. Identify professional standards and ethical conduct as prescribed by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
List examples of ethical conduct.
Explain the purpose of standards prescribed by IAAP.
Evaluation Criteria/Policies: Students must demonstrate proficiency on all CCPOs at a minimal 75 percent level to successfully complete the course. The grade will be determined using the DTCC grading system:
92 – 100 = A 83 – 91 = B 75 – 82 = C 0 – 74 = F
