Awards Committee Member: 2012 APWA Awards Committee American Public Works Association

Re: John Depp, 2012 Anthony W. Leffin Lifetime Achievement Nomination

Dear Awards Committee Member:

It is my pleasure to nominate John Depp for the 2012 American Public Works Association Anthony W. Leffin Lifetime Achievement Award. John personifies a lifetime of service to Public Works. From humble beginnings in Kentucky as a City Engineer, to his days in South Florida as a Public Works Director and City Engineer to his second career working for Contractors, he’s been a staunch supporter of APWA. Few folks can claim to have joined before Cheech, but John’s got him beat by a couple of months!

As one of a very few Life Members in the Florida Chapter, John has been there through thick and thin. His career in Public works began in Kentucky in the early 60’s where he served as a City Engineer in Owensboro. In 1970 John took a job as Public Works Director for the City of Miramar and moved the family to Florida. By 1979 we pick up the story with John officially joining APWA. For fifteen years he served as Public Works Director before leaving Hallandale to join Florida Highway Products in the 1996. John continued to serve APWA as a steadfast sponsor of our Trade Show in addition to various South Florida Branch events.

John has spent most of his life in Public Works. I think the most significant evidence of his passion for APWA is his constant attendance at our Trade Show well after most people in his position would have retired and ceased to remain involved. Not John, as a Representative for FHP he spent countless hours espousing the benefits of alternative paving processes and has been a proponent for APWA as a sponsor to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, the Florida Chapter wouldn’t be what it is today without the support that John and FHP (now RMI) has given APWA.

It is with great pride that I wholeheartedly endorse his nomination for the Florida Chapter’s Anthony W. Leffin Lifetime Achievement Award. After literally six decades in the Public Works profession and tripling the years of service required for consideration of this award, I think it’s time we recognize John Depp. Thank you for your consideration of John Depp for this award.

Sincerely,

Chris Evers President-Elect Florida Chapter APWA First to Respond…Last to Leave http://florida.apwa.net
