Group Training Companies are community based organisations who aim to maximise employment opportunities and quality of training for local people and local employers. They are private, non profit companies.

Sunraysia and Murray Group Training (SMGT) started in 1983 and initially dealt with apprenticeships only. SMGT is now involved in a range of employment and training programs however apprenticeships remain a core activity.

APPRENTICESHIPS

An Apprenticeship is a combination of work and training which teaches an Apprentice all aspects of a trade.

The combination of on the job training at work and off the job training at TAFE or other training providers is protected by the Vocational Education and Training Act of 1992, which requires that every Apprentice and his/her employer enters into a Contract of Training at the beginning of the Apprenticeship.

The employer is then committed to provide employment for the term of the contract and to teach the trade including sending the Apprentice to approved off the job training. The Apprentice is required to work diligently to achieve the required competencies and must do everything the employer lawfully asks her or him to do.

All Apprenticeships commence with three months probation period designed to allow both parties to be certain about the arrangement.

GROUP APPRENTICESHIP

As a group apprentice, SMGT will be your legal employer, but you will work with the Host Employer who registers a vacancy in your trade area.

Terms and conditions of employment for group apprentices are no different from other apprentices except that they are not contracted to an individual employer and therefore can potentially work for several employers throughout the Apprenticeship. They are, at all times, the legal employee of the Group Training Company.

Experience with different employers makes the apprenticeship interesting and challenging and encourages faster and broader development of skills. Group Training has an excellent record of producing highly skilled and widely experienced tradespersons.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Whilst there are proven benefits in gaining experience with different employers, this arrangement makes specific demands on Apprentices and SMGT seeks only those who best display desired qualities.

Applicants must have a mature outlook and be flexible and adaptable to different work environments. Evidence of significant knowledge of the chosen trade gained through work experience and/or research is essential.
