Context The British Red Cross is the largest voluntary humanitarian organisation in the world. It promotes humanitarian values, and provides emergency help to people in short-term crisis in the UK and overseas. Within the UK, the British Red Cross operates through 34,000 volunteers and 2,500 staff.

This is a role within the High Value Giving department, which comprises the Trust and Statutory (TS), Major Donors, Events and the Corporate fundraising teams. The Trusts & Statutory team is targeted to raise £4.7m in 2011.

Scope The post holder will be responsible for supporting the work of experienced Trusts/statutory fundraisers and will develop fundraising skills via supported experience. Their technical knowledge / competencies will be developed via formal training so that they have the ability to manage a portfolio of minor trusts.

Overall purpose of the post The Trusts/Statutory Fundraising Trainee position will provide an effective means of developing Trust/Statutory fundraising skills for those with only a small amount of previous direct Trusts/Statutory fundraising experience.

Main duties and responsibilities 1. With the support of more experienced colleagues, to develop effective appeals aimed at minor Trusts and statutory bodies aimed at raising income for British Red Cross

At an appropriate time, it is expected that they will take on management responsibilities for a portfolio of minor trusts (giving potential £1k- £5k) 2. To play a key role in the regular mailing programme to small-medium value Trusts that regularly donate general funds to the British Red Cross. 3. To provide timely feedback and reports to minor Trusts/statutory bodies 4. To gain an understanding and contribute to the process of developing strategies, budgets and plans for the British Red Cross Trust / Statutory fundraising programme. 5. To support experienced Trust / Statutory fundraising colleagues in undertaking qualitative research to identify Charitable Trusts and statutory bodies with the potential to support the British Red Cross 6. To work with other staff members across the British Red Cross regarding provision of information and input to Trust and statutory applications. 7. To liase with external individuals and organisations, as appropriate, in relation to Trust and statutory applications 8. To play a key role in the financial administration of the Trusts / Statutory team 9. To access & update the Trust database as per agreed guidelines & to contribute to its ongoing development via participation in & implementation of the database workgroup action plan 10. At an appropriate stage in their development, to provide mentoring support to volunteers within the team & contribute to the volunteer work plan 11. To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to work within the British Red Cross’ Equal Opportunities Policy 12. To undertake any other duties as requested by the Senior TS Fundraiser

Trusts / Statutory Fundraiser (Trainee)

Education Educated to degree level or equivalent** Experience A good level of experience of raising funds / developing relationships with organisational donors** Demonstrable experience of writing effectively and concisely** A good level of experience of office work** Experience gained in a marketing, PR or sales environment Experience of supervising volunteers A good level of experience of working for a charity in either a paid or voluntary capacity Knowledge/ Ability to write concisely and persuasively** Technical skills Research skills** An appreciation of the challenges involved in caring for donors** Computer literate** Understanding of budgets

Personal skills Adoption of a proactive approach to carrying out** responsibilities in the role Flexible and able to prioritise workload and meet deadlines Confident and persuasive presentation and verbal communication skills Ability to develop strong and positive relationships with fundraising and service delivery colleagues
