Asha for Education 2

Asha for Education approved the following two projects for implementation by ETASHA in the year September 2011 to August 2012: 1. Vocational Training and Placement of 80 Disadvantaged Youth 2. Creation of Audio Materials to reinforce Learning of Spoken English

The projects were approved in mid 2011 and the funds transmitted in August 2011. As such, this report covers the progress report of both these projects for the period September 2011 to August 2012.

Project 1 - Vocational Training and Placement of 80 Disadvantaged Youth - The project was named Project Prerna. The focus of training under this project was our flagship program titled 'Customer Service & Work Culture'(CSWC).

Project Prerna involved enrollment of 80 underprivileged youth in the CSWC program, followed by their training and skill development in Selling and Customer Service Skills as well as in the core employability skills of Spoken English, Intrapersonal and Interpersonal skills, Social Confidence building, Computer and Internet Usage and enhancing their understanding of the World of Work.

The students successfully completing the programs were to be placed in jobs with growth potential in reputable companies.

Brief description of the training program CSWC are as follows:

CSWC is ETASHA’s flagship program. With over 200 hours of inputs, it is designed to develop attitudes & values, develop hard and soft skills and finally place young people into entry level careers in the service sector. The program is divided into 6 components: Spoken English – over 70 hours of learning time to maximize students’ use of spoken English. English is also the main medium of communication outside the classroom, including field trips, assignments and presentations. Content is context based relating to the service industries which students will later join. Computer Usage – Facilitated tuition covering basic MS Word and Excel, Internet usage, web-mail and data entry skills focusing on speed and accuracy. Many students take advantage of the computer rooms to increase their skills after class. English is also the medium of communication in Computer Usage classes. Interpersonal Skills – designed to increase students’ ability to successfully operate within structured business environments. Skills developed include time management, listening skills, conflict management and anger management, while value clarification relates to issues such as respect for self and others, recognizing strengths and areas for improvement and formulating vision and goals for life. Social Confidence – assignment based field visits to modern service sector environments serve 2 main functions i) to de-mystify environments our

Page 2 Asha for Education 3

students may feel excluded from; ii) to set a context for personal grooming, dependability, etc. Presentations in English further help students to gain confidence. World of Work – covers the reality of work & workplaces, terminology, structures/hierarchies, roles and responsibilities, understanding of organizational structures, interview techniques and successful CV writing. Selling Skills – from the 4Ps to the sales cycle, objection handling and customer care, this component of our program helps students understand the ‘science’ that underpins successful selling and customer service. Role plays help students develop selling and customer service skills. Eligibility: Minimum 10th pass and 18 years of age. Duration: 13 weeks x 3 hours a day x 6 days a week. Class Size: Maximum 20

In the last weeks of the program students undergo rigorous study and preparation to ready them for placement into the organised sector, with ETASHA’s placement team managing the procedure of connecting young people with potential employers, arranging interviews and reassuring and supporting them through the process until placement is made.

Some Photographs and Success Stories of student beneficiaries of Project Prerna are attached herewith

Long-term goals of the project (mention any changes you foresee)

Project Prerna was conceived within ETASHA's core objectives of providing market- oriented employability and vocational skills to disadvantaged Indian youth.

The goal of ETASHA's Vocational Training activities is to continuously attempt to increase the reach of training and linkage with growth oriented careers in organised sectors of industry for underprivileged youth.

Description of current school (society) facilities (building, equipment etc)

ETASHA operates from 3 rented premises - 1 from which the head office or Career Development Institute functions and 2 from which the Career Development Centers function.

The head office shares space with other offices, so the facilities are somewhat expandable. Full communication, internet and computing facilities are available.

The CDCs have one computer lab each with a combination of 20 PCs and laptops, two or three classrooms with around 20 chairs, a durrie and a whiteboard each, and an office room with table, few chairs, a PC and cupboards for materials and library. Common facilities in a CDC include a pantry with water purifier, an inverter and tea/coffee making equipment and crockery. Air coolers are available particularly in the Computer lab, and in the classrooms if possible.

How do you need to improve these facilities?

We need to cool the computer lab more efficiently to protect the computers from the intense heat in peak summer. However, uninterrupted availability of power all year round is itself a major issue - more back-up power would also be required.

How do you think the school (the Society) has improved in the last year

Over the last year or so, ETASHA has got strengthened both strategically and operationally. In terms of strategic issues, we have been able to actualise the ITI model as well as the Corporate partnership model.

We have conducted effective employability skills programs for 600 girls in ITI, SiriFort, which has resulted in their calling us again for conducting the same institute-wide program this year.

A program in collaboration with Nippon Paints to recruit and train colour matchers for the Automotive paints industry, was a ground-breaking effort, which involved training for

Page 9 Asha for Education 10 a skill for which no training facilities existed. This effort is also leading to discussions with several other industries with whom we can collaborate to provide training for newly evolving trades.

Operationally, we were able to strengthen our community mobilisation efforts to improve our intake of students to include only those that were keen on starting employment immediately after training. This has also showed through in the form of less drop-outs in later programs as well as better placement ratios. Our Placement efforts have also become stronger, we are now able to place most of the students within a month of the training program getting over

What are the problems you have faced in the last year?

In the beginning of the year, mobilisation of youth appeared especially difficult. However, we were able to improve this significantly towards the end of the year.

How would you rate the overall effectiveness of this project over the past year?

Program effectiveness is significantly improved

How much longer do you foresee requiring Asha funding, and for what purposes?

Since our target audience is from the underprivileged segment, by definition, they cannot pay the full cost of training and placement. In fact, we are able to charge them only about 15% of the cost of the program.

We are able to convince some employers to pay a placement fee for the employees recruited by them. However for this revenue stream to reach significant proportions, we need to reach a scale of operations where employers can be assured of finding candidates whenever and of whatever caliber they wanted.

We visualise needing funding support for another 5 years or so.

Project 2 - Creation of Audio Materials to reinforce Learning of Spoken English

This project has been named ' Project Shruti', reminiscent of the Indian tradition of oral teaching and learning of scriptures and is our attempt to overcome the challenges presented by the inability of underprivileged youth to reinforce and practice their developing English language skills outside of class. Practicing English is difficult for students once out of the classroom as they are rarely or never have access to other English speakers; their families are unlikely to accommodate requests to watch / listen to English language TV stations /radio stations and English is not spoken in the local communities.

Trainees are more engaged when using technology and are more receptive to audio and visual stimuli than the written word. While the project proposal had been based on

Page 13 Asha for Education 14 audio cassettes played on cassette players, as we explored the market, we found major advantages in using MP3 players over Cassette players. MP3 players had become more affordable and were considered 'fashionable' and therefore attractive to young people. they are also more portable and easier to handle. The portable nature of the MP3 players also means trainees can be studying while on the way to work or school, while outside and at home in bed. We therefore decided to use MP3 players rather than Cassette Players.

Language learning requires repetition and reinforcement and this method lends itself to both the circumstances of the students and to language learning in general. Once the project is complete, trainees will have access to low cost MP3 players, pre-recorded with contextually relevant content for each session, listed by session number and session focus.

The project involved the following stages: Conceptualization of the project and planning of content Script Writing for 38 Lessons Design of worksheet for each lesson Translation - Instructions for listening and practice are in both English and Hindi Procuring of equipment for recording and playback instruments Recording of audio material Field testing Finalizing of materials and creation of master files Recording on Playback Instruments to be given to trainees Launch

The project started off well in mid November 2011. Project conceptualization, script writing, translation and procuring of equipment for recording were completed by mid March 2012.

Recording of the audio material had gotten started when the audio specialist got taken ill and was unavailable till early August.

The Project re-started in August 2012. The balance audio material was recorded.

Field testing of the recorded material was done on some students from among the existing batches of students.

The recordings are being transferred to MP 3 players, and the process is expected to be concluded by end September 2012.

Project Shruti is expected to be launched by mid October, with one batch of students having access to the audio material, while a second batch starting around the same time will go through the training without the supplementary material. Progress of the two batches will be tracked continuously through the three month period of training. results of the process will therefore be available by end January 2013.
