Course Description: I welcome you to a new school year at Dutchtown High. My name is Mrs. Moncrief and I will be serving as your “tour guide” as we travel through our studies of the French language. This course will introduce you to the French language and culture. My goal for each of you is that you will be able to communicate basic information about your self, needs, wants and emotions so that you will be able to function in realistic situations. A large focus of the class is the spoken language so you will be expected to speak in this class!!!! The following information is to aid you in having a successful and enjoyable year.

In class resource: Textbook Allez Viens! Holt, Rinehart, Winston ($58.95) Other classroom materials provided by the teacher will be used.

Student Materials Needed: Notebook/3-ring binder 1-1.5" Notebook paper Dividers Pencil/Pen (blue or black ink) Expo marker – for own use Index cards – unless using a flashcard app on your phone Markers/crayons – for own use

Essential Questions: Which countries use French as an official language? How do the English and French languages compare to each other? How do I introduce myself to others in the target language? How do describe my friends and family in the target language?

Grading: Assignment Tiers:  Assessments-(50%) Tier 1 assignments will be graded and entered into IC within one week. These  Classwork-(40%) types of activities are mainly homework and classwork tasks.  Homework- (10%) Tier 2 assignments – quizzes/tests – will be graded and entered into IC within two  Final exam – (20%) weeks. Expectations Tier 3 assignments – major projects – will be entered into IC within three weeks Students are expected to:  arrive to class on time with your materials daily and any completed assignments.  sit in their assigned seats and complete all activities that are assigned.  not eat or drink in class. All containers should be in book bags, not on desks.  take ownership of their work (DO NOT copy from others on any type of assignment).  not use any electronic devices during class time unless directed to do so for a specific assignment. Otherwise no electronic devices should be out during class time for any reason.  Be respectful.  NOTE: The use of language translators (online, hand held, etc.) are strictly prohibited on ANY assignment in the world language classroom. Their use constitutes academic dishonesty and will be handled according to DHS and Henry County Codes of Conduct. A "0" will be issued for the assignment in this case.  DHS and Henry County Schools’ policies will be followed. Consequences for misbehavior will be enforced according to DHS and Henry County Codes of Conduct.

The following Four Step Discipline Policy will be in place: 1st offense – Warning/Teacher-Student Conference 2nd offense – Teacher/Student Conference and Parental Notification 3rd offense – Parental Notification and or Parent-Teacher Conference 4th offense – Administrative Referral Make-up Work Make-up work is the student’s responsibility. The teacher WILL NOT approach you about your assignments. When you return from an EXCUSED absence it is your responsibility to get any missing work. You will have 1 day for every day absent from the date that you return from an EXCUSED absence to complete and turn in your make-up work. Work not completed and turned in according to the guidelines above will be considered missing work and will follow the guidelines in the missing work section.

Missing Work / Late Work Students who fail to turn in assignments when they have NOT been absent will be required to make arrangements to complete that work. A “missing work” contract will be arranged and parents will be notified of the new due date for their child’s work. Points will also be deducted from the assignment.

Tutoring Days: Monday and Thursday Times: 3:30-4:15pm. Place: Room 208 *At times other meetings may arise that require me to cancel tutoring, however students will be notified that day if I cannot have tutoring.
