Explicit Shared reading is a time when both the teacher and the students get to read a piece of text together. Sometimes during shared Instruction reading we may use a big book, a short poem, a song, a chant, or a nursery rhyme. Shared reading is important for us to practice in kindergarten because we are a community of readers and this is one way we can get better at reading.
During shared reading, I’ll begin by showing you the title of what we’re about to read. Then it’s my turn to read aloud the passage to you. As I’m reading, your job as students is to listen to me read and watch as I point to the words. Once I’m finished reading it aloud to you then as a class we get to read the passage all together at the same time. As a class we may practice doing this a few times so that our reading gets stronger with each reread.
