Job Title General Helper - Grounds Department Facilities

Reports To Grounds Supervisor Positions Supervised Hours M-F: 6:30am – 3:00 pm, on-call for snow removal and ice control

Employment Class Hourly, Non-Exempt, Union EEO Class 8 Laborers and Helpers Authorized Driver Yes

Summary

Maintain and improve all University grounds, roadways, associated structures and related equipment. Provide assistance with receipt, transport, storage of furniture, equipment and supplies.

Essential Job Functions

• Maintain all turf including seeding, edging and mowing of lawns. • Maintain athletic fields and tennis courts including nets, goals, striping and baseball dirt. • Trim, prune, plant and maintain flowerbeds, shrubs and trees. • Remove and dispose of shrub, tree and landscape debris as directed. • Maintain grounds department tools and equipment in a safe, neat and orderly manner. • Roadway plowing, sidewalk/stairway clearing of snow, apply snow/ice melt for safe use. • Transport supplies and materials as requested. • Unload delivery trucks - reconcile materials received with Bill of Lading. • Move, rearrange, and organize furniture as requested. • Provide remodel/demolition assistance. • Pick up trash and debris from grounds, empty trash and cigarette receptacles. • Maintain roofs, gutters, drains and sewers free from leaves and debris. • Report suspicious person’s activities or events to supervision and/or security. • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

• Ability to communicate effectively to staff, residents, fellow employees, visitors and supervisors verbally and in writing. • Ability to safely operate grounds department tools and equipment including hand power tools, riding and push mowers, tractors and trucks. • Valid state of Illinois Driver’s License.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

• Neat in appearance. • Strong people skills; friendly and personable and knowledge of workplace safety. • Must have the ability to control emotions and maintain composer under stress, using tact, good judgment and the ability to work with others as a team.
