Seniors Center Annex, Lenexa Community Center

13420 Oak (corner of Pflumm and Santa Fe Trail Dr.), Lenexa, KS Board meeting 6:30PM Club meeting 7:15PM

You never know what you will find. This past month, while on a business trip, I asked for some change for a five dollar bill. The clerk came back with five ones and apologized for the new currency. I usually would have just placed them in my wallet, but I decided just to take a glance at them. As I looked at the serial numbers, I notice that they were all 2001 Atlanta Star notes. I asked, “Do you have any more of these?” She replied, “Sure, I just broke the seal on the $100 package”. Well, to make a long story short, I purchased the entire package of $100 star notes for $100. You never know what you will find.

Last month Bill Woytowich spoke on Civil War era stamps, fraction currency, coins and how they were used. I know we all enjoyed his presentation. We had over 48 members present with three new members and two new YN’s. Our Raffle for the certified $5 dollar silver certificate was very well received and sold over 200 tickets. This month in our raffle we will have a certified $1 silver certificate graded by CGA at CU64 and door prize items. Our YN’s will also have a special treat with 5 lots in our monthly auction that will only be for YN’s. I know everyone will enjoy watching them bid.

Our board has approved the award of two scholarships for the ANA Summer Conference in Colorado Springs for 2004. Our winners were Chuck Thomas and Bill Woytowich. Congratulations to you both. We will be looking forward to your report on your adventure in Colorado.

Everyone wants to know how to stay up with the increasing value of their collection. Our presentation this month will be on price guides old and new and how to use them, from the old standard “Red Book” to the online value guides. If you were wondering how to calculate the value of your coins, you won’t want to miss this presentation.

The ANA has approved our designs for the spring 2005 ANA Medal and elongated Nickels. They are simply the best designs I have seen. Thanks to the Committee and Rich Gilson (our designer) for all of the effort put into the final designs.

Board Members and officers – Please don’t forget to review the 2005 Spring ANA Medal proposal that was proposed last month. We will be voting on this issue this month.
