Letter and Sound of the Week: Review

Kindergarten News – 2/8/16 Letter and Sound of the Week: Review Themes of the Week: Valentines Words of the Week: play, with

Dear Kindergarten Families:

It’s a big week of love and kindness! Our class is trying to do100 acts of kindness by the end of the month! The children will become little “love bugs” as they deliver Valentine messages around the building. Their baby pictures are adorable! We’ll try to guess who they are on Friday.

Language Arts: We will read many books about Valentine’s Day and sharing, love, and caring that we will discuss. We’ll have Valentine Centers and an ice cream sundae on Friday. Review the letters: S, M, R, T, B, N, H, V, A, C, P, G, F, L, K, I, Q, D, Z Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can, go, an, and, we, look, no, not, love, at, here, on, this, is, it, you, are, for, have, said, will, do, big, little, play, with No new “juicy” vocabulary words this week.

Penguin Unit: Your child’s penguin folders should have come home Friday, filled with the activities and lessons we completed. They really enjoy learning about informational topics.

RAZ, Starfall, ABCya: Many students are enjoying the websites that are on the Monteith webpage under “Students.” Hopefully you will get a chance to spend some time with your child on the computer to ask questions and see what they can do – and to steer them toward the correct way to play, instead of just racing to get the most points/stars, etc. They are a fun way to learn!

Math: We continue counting to100 by ones, fives and tens, focusing on 11 through 20, using tally marks, and adding/subtracting to 10. We are using ten frames to understand place value.

Science: Last week we discovered some things that sink and float in water. This week we will make some materials “disappear” in water! (Dissolve)

Coins for Penguins: The students will practice sorting and counting coins this week. I will let you know how much we collected and turn them in to make a donation to the Detroit Zoo Penguinarium.

Dancing Around the World – The Diversity Committee put on another fun event full of learning about some wonderful cultures last Friday! It was great to see so many families having fun together. I was happy to see Dorian, Kieran, Charlie and Lexie!
