Chapter Three and Four – Hair, Fibers and Textiles

I. Standard: SFS2. Student will use various scientific techniques to analyze physical and trace evidence. a. Analyze the morphology and types of hair, fibers, soil and glass. b. Distinguish and categorize physical and trace evidence. c. Determine the proper technique to search isolate, collect and record trace evidence.

II. Learning Goals: a. Know your VOCABULARY b. What are the three major parts of hair? How does animal hair differ from human hair? What characteristics of hair can help investigators determine race? c. What are the three major categories of fibers? What can you conclude from a burn analysis of fibers? How can you distinguish between weave patterns? What can microscopic AND macroscopic analysis of fibers tell you about the fibers?

IV. Writing Assignments- Classroom debate using hair as evidence. Details will be given in class.

V. Practical Activity: Chapter 3 HAIR 1. Identify parts & char of your hair; (Draw, Color, Label and describe ALL parts of each hair.) 2. Racial comparisons of hair. (Draw, Color, Label and describe ALL parts of each hair.) 3. Comparison of various animal hairs (BRING IN PET HAIR SAMPLES) 4. Hair Impressions Lab – (If time permits)

VI. Chapter Review- Complete ALL questions in the reviews at the end of Chapter 3 & 4.
