SUMMARYIMPORTANT DETAILS OF JOURNEY: (5 sentences) Dante and Virgil leave Limbo and encounter Minos who gets mad at Dante for not begin dead. Minos tries to send them back, but Virgil tells him God is in control. The poets are in the middle of a great windstorm which spins with the souls of the Lustful (Carnal). Dante sees several famous people from history and mythology and asks to speak to a pair of them, two famous lovers who stop to tell him their story. After hearing their story, Dante is overcome with pity and passes out.
PUNISHMENT/ENVIRONMENT: Souls are battered about in a giant windstorm for all of eternity.
CONTRAPASSO: Because the sinner would not control themselves on earth they do not have the opportunity for control in Hell.

This quote shows how weak and raw Dante is emotionally. The irony of the simile comes from the fact that he is in Hell, yet he is not dead. He is sorry for these sinners.
