The post holder will work as part of a Red Cross Ambulance Crew to provide high quality care to patients, in partnership with the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) NHS Foundation Trust across the Trust area.

Overall Purpose of the Post

The Ambulance Crew is responsible for the day to day operation and deployment of a Red Cross Emergency Ambulance working under contract for SECAmb. The role will be to work as part of a two person team responsible for providing safe and effective emergency and non-emergency pre-hospital care for people within the South of England, and if necessary further afield. This role will require the use of your relevant skills and qualifications provided by the organisation, including the British Red Cross BTEC Level 2 ambulance crew award, to treat and convey patients to hospital as required.

It may be necessary to respond as a “first response” to life threatening emergencies, or assist and support another qualified practitioner in the delivery of high quality and effective clinical and personal care and the safe transportation of patients. You will utilise your qualification in selecting and applying appropriate equipment and skills to treat and transport patients in line with the scope of practice current protocols and Care Quality Commission standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities  Provide safe and dignified care for patients as indicated by the patient condition, within the British Red Cross scope of practice  Operate the service compliant with Care Quality Commission standards and British Red Cross policies  Recognise the requirement to obtain consent before undertaking treatment and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.  Ensure that pathways of care are communicated in all patient handovers  Monitor the patient and seek appropriate assistance if the condition of the patient deteriorates  Keep accurate and appropriate records for all patient episodes and management information systems.  Recognise unidentified need among service users and be able to respond and/or refer on to other agencies or other Red Cross programmes as necessary.  Ensure that service user feedback is actively promoted, routinely collected and used to improve and develop the services offered.  Undertake a vehicle inspection at the start of each shift – ensuring that the vehicle is safe, legal, appropriately stocked and that all equipment is in date and operational.  Undertake emergency driving, with appropriate use of road traffic regulations, adhering to the standards of and training from your emergency driving qualification  Work effectively as part of a team at all times, which may at times be under the direction of other medical professionals  Maintain a competent working knowledge of and operate all required types of communications equipment utilised in the service (including radio, telephone and mobile data terminals, such as Terrafix) in accordance to BRCS and SECAmb protocols to convey accurate information about urgent and routine work, and patient information to NHS staff and those from other services as appropriate.  Comply with relevant Health and Safety procedures particularly to ensure safe practice for patients and safe working of equipment/vehicles  Comply with basic scene safety checks and the associated risk assessments, working with other healthcare and emergency services staff  Adhere to organisational operational policies and procedures appropriate for ambulance operations.  Develop and maintain clinical skills for a range of emergency situations as directed by SECAmb and within relevant polices/protocols and procedures of BRCS  Undertake mandatory continuation training and evidence in continuing professional development portfolio as required by the British Red Cross and SECAmb to ensure clinical competency  Undertake mentoring of other BRC ambulance crews when requested  Ensure that vehicles are cleaned, appropriately stocked and refuelled as required.  Able to work unsocial hours on a rota basis, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.  To be committed to and able to work within the Fundamental Principles of the British Red Cross and its Equal Opportunities Policy.  To undertake any other duties as required.
