TITLE OF INSTRUCTOR POSITION Tenure Track BC Mathematics Instructor (Delano Campus) PLEASE PROVIDE A SUMMARY AND RATIONALE OF FACULTY POSITION REQUEST (You may copy and paste from your COMPREHENSIVE OR ANNUAL PROGRAM REVIEW.)

Substantiate recommendations with data and the guidelines listed in the Budget Decision Criteria and College Strategic Goals documents. 1) Student population growth has impacted the Math Department’s ability to offer a full range of mathematics courses, especially in Delano and in the other rural communities . 2) Adjuncts are not readily available in Kern County. 3) Waitlists are full for every offered math class. (See Trend Data Analysis section IV b) 4) Math courses are pre-requisite for a variety of programs. Students will not be able to proceed with educational plans unless they can get into a math course. 5) Help meet goal: 1.6 (KCCD 1.2) Increase the percentage of students who, within a one-year period, successfully complete English or Math courses both one level below transfer and at the transfer level. 6) The Mathematics Department (Main Campus and Delano) currently generates 1,616.5 FTES and generates approximately $8,082,500 at $5000 per FTES. Adding another full-time math instructor in Delano would generate an additional 17.5 to 23.3 FTES. 7) To support student success specifically in Delano. The STEM-IT program would like to expand to the rural areas and offer higher level math courses such as calculus, which is not usually taught in Delano. The director of Delano campus has been working closely with the STEM-IT dean to make this happen.

INTERNAL REVIEW OF POSITION

Revised by: Program Review Committee (June 2, 2014) Page 1 D. New position: How is the work assigned to this position presently A. Explain why the work accomplished? cannot be reassigned to other staff within the 1) The work that would be assigned to this position is currently being handled department by BC Main Campus instructors. In other words, rural area students who need calculus would have to come to the BC Main Campus on a daily basis 1) Our adjuncts are to receive instruction in calculus. This can create a hardship for these used to their students because of the daily travel time. Also, the calculus classes at the maximum load, main campus are filled to capacity, and so it can be difficult to get these and in one case, students to get into calculus on the main campus. (See Trend Data Analysis special permission section IV b) was received to have an adjunct teach a load over 0.667. It is also difficult to get adjunct to teach in the rural areas because of the travel time. 2) Because classes like Math B22 and Math B2 had course units changed from 5 to 4, full-time math faculty have to teach more classes to make their 15 load hours for full time.

B. Impact on College/District if position is not filled 1) Delano and the other rural areas will not be able to offer more STEM, or transfer level math courses. This will affect 105 to 140 students a semester who live in rural areas and need transfer level math courses. Currently, the Delano campus offers pre- calculus on a limited basis and does not offer calculus.
