Wednesday 6th September 2017 Dear Parents,
Firstly, I would like to say how much I am looking forward to joining the team at Hailey and to meeting you. This year all our classes were asked to choose a mythical creature as their name and we are now officially Griffin class.
This term our new topic is Alchemy Island. We will be entering a fantasy world where all kinds of adventures can happen – think Narnia with a bit Lord of the Rings! We’ll become the Chief Alchemist’s assistants undertaking science experiments to learn about changes in materials. We’ll be reading and writing fantasy narratives and poems as well as building our geographical knowledge of this mysterious island, amongst other things.
In Maths we will begin the term focusing on number, moving on to a range of other areas such as measurement and geometry.
Reading Please encourage your child/ren to read for up to (or more than!) 20 minutes per day. They can either read themselves or to you. Please can they also record what they are reading in their reading records. I will be encouraging the class to share their book recommendations with others. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a fictional novel they read – encyclopedias, annuals etc are all great ways of building understanding. More details will follow on the school’s Reading Challenge.
PE We will have PE on Thursdays and Fridays but please ensure that your child has their kit in school all week as timetables might change. If your child does not have the appropriate kit they will not be able to take part in PE.
Homework Maths homework will be set on a Friday and a spelling related activity will be set each week. This term’s topic homework (details to follow) is to be handed in by 17th October. Please encourage and support your child/ren to complete their homework as it will extend or consolidate work in class.
I aim to put up important info on a board by the door to Juniors as I know from experience that it does not always make it home! I am around at the end of each day so please come and say hello. If you would like to arrange to see me about something specific let me know or speak to the office so we ensure you get an appointment.
Best wishes
Mrs Droy
