Report of Parks and Recreation Committee discussion

The Committee approved the April 26, 2011 minutes

The Chairman Ralph Buxton gave the Committee an update regarding the Board of Commissioners Public Hearing on a grant to extend the multi-use path. Chairman Buxton also reviewed the minutes from the May 16th Public Meeting.

Elizabeth Teague stated Staff will take the information form the Public meeting and surveys and come up with common themes. Staff would then bring the common themes and surveys back to the Committee and the committee would sift through them and use them to help establish priorities for the plan.

Brian Wehner discussed the youth survey results. He stated the committee should leave them open for awhile so that others can respond. He also said he would like to see something done at the Town’s 50th Anniversary celebration to get others to complete the survey.

Elizabeth Teague stated that staff will explore trying to do something during the Carnival to collect more surveys. Maybe a computer can be set up for people to take the survey. After discussion, the Committee decided the survey should stay open until the end of June.

Dave Elder stated it would be nice to know the number of children who reside in Nags Head.

Brian Wehner said he could try to get those numbers. He also stated he would send the complete survey results to the entire Committee.

Marvin Demers stated he thought there was good input from the audience members in the older adult range at the Public Meeting. He stated the older adult sub-committee would have a final report at the next meeting.

Ralph Buxton updated the committee about the community Interaction sub-committee meeting. He said they sub-committee had the same ideas about recreational opportunities that the Committee has discussed. The final decision about what to do with the site is up to the Tourism Board and the Town. Currently, the Tourism Board and the Town wants to pursue a stage on the site to hold music events. Long term, they have not decided what will be built on the site.

Elizabeth Teague stated there was a conversation about “Taste of the Beach” and other events being held there as well. She also stated Staff is going to talk to Ducks Events Coordinator to learn more about events coordination as the Town would need someone to manage the site and program the events.

Mark Cornwell stated he would like to do a ride around of the Town’s current facilities to see what need to be fixed and upgraded with the other two members of the sub-committee. Ralph Buxton stated he would like to go as well. Elizabeth Teague stated staff would contact the facilities sub-committee regarding a date and time for the ride around. She would also try and locate a Town vehicle that would accommodate everyone.

The Committee discussed the cut off date for the youth survey. It was decided the survey would close on June 24 and the results would be given to Staff on June 27. Staff would find common themes on the survey and present them to the committee on their meeting June 28.

Information for next meeting

Staff was to contact the Town’s Public Information Officer to ask if she could advertise the youth survey again on the e-mail blast as well as state the closing date of the survey was June 24th. Staff is also to gather information about a parcel of approximately 11.5 acres near the post office which may be for sale.

The Committee decided to meet again on Tuesday June 28, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Conference room at Town Hall. The meeting was adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
