REQUIRED MATERIAL Getting’ It Together by Jamey Aebersold (Volume 21) 3 ring binder for class handouts Supplemental: The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine
PREREQUISTES: You must have basic proficiency on your instrument
EVALUATION: Grades will be based on the following:
1. Attendance and participation (9 songs TBA) 2. Demonstrated progress 4. Exercises/Quizzes/Blackboard Assignments 4. Project: . Solo transcription . Paper compare solo styles between two artists . Analyze a solo transcription . Learn a transcribed solo by memory FINAL PROJECT DUE WED. MAY 21 10:15AM
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all sessions of class in which they are enrolled. Points will be given for attendance More than 3 absences may lower your grade by one letter grade. There will not be make-up quizzes or make-up work.
Class will start promptly at 11:00am so please be on time as I will not always be able to repeat material that you missed due to lateness.

Week 1-3: What is Jazz-(Blackboard Assignment) login with your Id and birthdate Rhythm interpretation Keeping time Keeping track of time Subdivision Swing Rock (Funk, Smooth jazz, etc.) Latin (Bossa nova, Salsa, etc.) Major Scales-Exercise
Week 4-5: Major/minor scales Major Scales-Triad Exercise
Week 6-7: Chord spelling Diatonic triads Diatonic seventh chords Seventh Chord-Exercise Week 8-9: More Chords 9th, 11th, & 13th
Week 10-11: Altered Chords Flat 5th 9th & 13th Raised 5th 9th & 11th Tritone/triad Ii V I Voicing Chord-Exercise
Week12-13: Standards Forms Chord progressions Chord Progression-Exercise Week 14-15: More standards
Week 16-18: Review and Final Projects due
All written assignments must be turned in at the class meeting following the date of the assignment and theory assignment will be checked weekly. These exercises will prepare you for the two music theory tests during course of the term. MUSIC LAB HOURS
