7th FISU FORUM

21 – 28 July 2004 – Lisbon, Portugal

BUSA’s International Sport Committee has agreed to send a delegation of 4 persons to represent Great Britain at the 7th FISU Forum which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal form the 21 – 27 July 2004 The BUSA delegation will consist of:

a) 2 x Student Representatives (preferably 1 male, 1 female) b) 1 x Non-Student Member c) 1 x BUSA Staff Member

BUSA is seeking nominations from persons interested in filling either of the Student positions or Non-Student position. Successful candidates are likely to have a detailed knowledge of BUSA and its sporting programme and will have had an active involvement in BUSA, either as a representative athlete or as a committee member.

FISU As the international governing body of university sport, FISU is responsible for the operation of the international university sporting programme including the World University Games, the World Winter University Games and approximately 20 World University Championships. FISU is also responsible for the FISU Forum and the FISU Conference, the latter being an academic conference which, takes place as part of the World University Games. FISU recognises BUSA as the sole body responsible for UK representation at events under its auspices.

FISU Forum The FISU Forum is a biennial gathering of students and staff / senior figures involved in university sport from around the world. Great Britain has been represented at each of the previous four Forums.

The Forum offers delegates from all nations the opportunity to compare the university sport programmes and provision within different countries as well as to discuss the role of FISU and its sporting programme. Each day contains conference-style discussions, workshops and presentations. Location Lisbon, the capital of Portugal will be hosting the FISU Forum at the same time as Euro 2004. It nestles against seven hills on the north side of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River). Many of the city's attractions are within walking distance of each other in the central city area. Charming, medieval Alfama with its maze-like streets sits to the east, crowned by the magnificent Castelo de São Jorge. The Baixa's grid of tidy commercial avenues lies next to it, stretching from the riverfront Praça do Comércio up to the Praça da Figueira. The elegant Chiado shopping area climbs away to the west, while at the top end of the Baixa, the Elevador de Santa Justa sits at the juncture of the Bairro Alto. A traditional residential area, the Bairro Alto (high quarter) is also home to much of Lisbon's nightlife.

Travel It is likely that the BUSA delegation will travel to Lisbon on the 21 July and return on the 29 July 2004.

Funding BUSA will cover the majority of the costs of attending the Forum, although each of the successful applicants will be required to pay a Personal Contribution of £300 towards these costs.

NominationsNominations are invited, on the attached form, for the 2 Student places and the ‘Non-student member place that BUSA has agreed will attend the Forum. Nominees should fully complete the first side with as much detail as possible. Nominees must state clearly whether they are applying for the student or senior member (non-student) position.

On a separate sheet all nominees must (in no more than 500 words & typed) write an article detailing their personal thoughts on “The Educational Values of University Sport’

Nominations should be accompanied by a covering letter which highlights why an applicant considers himself / herself to be the best candidate to represent BUSA at the Forum.

Report The delegates selected to attend the Forum will be required to provide a detailed written report on proceedings that will be presented to a subsequent meeting of BUSA’s International Sport Committee. Some preparatory work prior to the Forum will be expected.

Closing DateCompleted nomination forms should be sent to Mark Brian, BUSA, 8 Union Street, London, SE1 1SZ and must arrive no later than Friday 26 March 2004.

Selection At this stage it is not intended to interview candidates for these positions, although BUSA reserves the right to do so. The successful nominees will be notified two weeks after the closing date.
