Information for Applicants s2

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate was originally established as a girls school in Harrogate in 1912. It is now a forward looking Independent Foundation of four schools, with 1750+ students aged between 3 – 18 years. The schools are based on the attractive Thorpe Underwood estate with Thorpe Underwood Hall at its centre, and, whilst each school has designated areas, they also share many of the facilities on the campus. As the Collegiate grows, teaching rooms, boarding houses and sports facilities are added and there is an ambitious ongoing development plan. The buildings and grounds are first rate with substantial investment giving purpose built facilities. Boys and girls are recruited from the UK and internationally and many are boarders who live on campus. Visitors to the Collegiate comment on the warm, family atmosphere and the happy students. The four schools ensure that every young person is known individually. Day students are welcome to enjoy all of the facilities and opportunities available to a boarder, but have chosen to return home at the end of a busy day. Our international community is celebrated and reflects an outward looking approach and enriches the educational experience that is offered, where all are expected to follow the philosophy of ‘being the best that they can, with the gifts that they have’. THE COLLEGIATE King’s Magna Middle School was established four years ago, to incorporate Years 6-9. It has since grown from its initial level of 240 students to a projected level of 400 students for September 2015. Housed in its own building, the Head, Deputy Head and Heads of Year work closely with the form tutors and subject teachers to provide a personalised approach to learning for each student. Approximately 40% of the students live in the local area and travel to school each day, the remaining 60% are UK and international boarders, providing King’s Magna with a cosmopolitan ethos and many opportunities for students to benefit from the different cultural experiences brought by their peers. Our other three schools are: Chapter House Preparatory School, which incorporates the Kindergarten. Many of our staff use this on a daily basis for their children. This is followed by Nursery, Reception and Years 1 – 5. Queen Ethelburga’s College offers a traditional academic pathway that includes fast tracking of examination courses and an enrichment programme within the timetabled day for students in Y10 – 13. The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s offers both academic and vocational study routes that include creative and performance sport programmes for student in Years 10 – 13. Academic mentor support is provided alongside opportunities for fast tracking the most able students.
