Dear [Insert Recipients Name Here],

I am writing today to urge you to take action on the issue of sepsis, which is responsible for the deaths of more than 258,000 Americans each year and has had a direct impact on myself, my family and my community. Sepsis kills more people than breast cancer, prostate cancer and AIDS combined. It costs the government more than $23 billion in health care costs annually and is the most expensive condition treated in hospitals. You can make a difference. Other states have passed legislation to mandate the implementation of common sense, statewide sepsis protocols in all medical institutions. I am writing to request that you introduce similar legislation to keep your constituents safe and reduce the unnecessary death toll from sepsis in our state.

Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to infection; it causes tissue damage, organ failure and death. Any kind of infection (a bug bite, a grazed knee, a urinary tract infection, pneumonia) can trigger sepsis.

Most death from sepsis are preventable, caused by lack of public awareness of the condition and poor hospital processes which lead to fatal delays in diagnosis and treatment. But sepsis is a solvable crisis. Hospital systems that have introduced sepsis protocols into emergency departments and wards have drastically reduced sepsis mortality and readmission rates as well as healthcare costs.

New York and Illinois, two of the most populous states in the nation, have both adopted mandatory statewide sepsis protocols. Called Rory’s Regulations and Gabby’s Law respectively after two children who died needlessly from undiagnosed, untreated sepsis, the regulations require all hospitals to adopt evidenced-based protocols to improve the rapid diagnosis and treatment of sepsis and reduce misdiagnoses and medical errors. In New York, these protocols are projected to save up to 8,000 lives each year. I firmly believe that every state should have these mandatory sepsis protocols implemented and, as your constituent, I ask you to support their adoption in [Insert Your State Here].

Sepsis shatters families and burdens our economy. I ask you to help put an end to thousands of preventable deaths from sepsis by adopting mandatory sepsis protocols in all medical institutions as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely,
