I. INTRODUCTIONS & REVIEW OF PREVIOUS MEETING MINUTES A. All Committee members signed in and introduced themselves. B. Minutes from the October 19, 1999 meeting were read and approved with the exception of a few minor changes that will be made.

II. REPORT FROM ROP

Tim Hern reported that Don Collins, the ROP Drafting Instructor at Dublin High School, is retiring. They are currently trying to hire his replacement.

III. REPORT FROM LAS POSITAS COLLEGE

Dr. Lucas noted she will be retiring in July of this year. Due to a reorganization in process at the college, the Drafting Program at LPC will be moved to Division 3 in the Fall. There was discussion of possibly having a joint meeting with other LPC advisory committee members. Some members thought this would be a good idea, but it should be taken a step further than just having another “meeting.” Possibly a workshop could be planned, including corporate, industry, and technology leaders from the local area; this may better serve the college and more specifically involve the community businesses in the planning process of college programs. Such a workshop would be a good place to share ideas and involve local businesses.

IV. REPORTS FROM BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES

Bud Engel reported on the California Industrial and Technology Educational Association meeting he attended in March; next year this conference will be held in Pasadena. He Drafting Tech Advisory Meeting, 4/18/2000 page 2 referenced a newsletter that came from this meeting, noting that one of the committee members had been working on a survey of industry people to find out what their needs were. A prominent need expressed is that new employees need to know the basic “grammar” of drafting. Those responding to the survey pointed out that they’ve been re-training newly hired people in this area, as well as teaching them about drafting in general. Mr. Engel noted this summer there’s a workshop with the Machine Tool Teachers’ Association at Modesto Junior College. He added that the CITEA membership fees were not increased and remain at $15.

V. RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS TO THE COLLEGE

Discussion followed regarding the status of technical facilities in today’s California educational institutions; the “average” shop is probably over 30 years old; there needs to be funding for newer, updated equipment in these shops statewide. Also, there are no teacher education programs other than Cal State L.A. The lack of teacher education creates a shortage of qualified technical educators. Mr. Engel noted there are philosophical differences between “industrial arts” and other technology programs. Mr. Danner agreed there is a shortage of qualified instructors for industrial arts and other technical areas, noting that when an opening exists, it usually takes months to fill it.

Mr. Engel suggested that, in addition to the Advisory Committee, there possibly needs to be a workshop for technical educators that would bring industry people together to “share” ideas and look more closely at the specific needs of industry. He noted in 1981 he attended a Design/Drafting Summer Workshop sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Department at LLNL. It proved very helpful to the attendees, who were able to meet with their colleagues to discuss mutual needs. Other members agreed this would be helpful.

Mr. Finn called the group’s attention to a recent event regarding drafting, which was sponsored by Solano Community College; it was called “Drafting Fest 2000.” This event was supported by various departments at the college, who were involved on different levels, making the fest a big success. He offered to supply specifics to local instructors as a means of enhancing their recruiting and public relations efforts.

VI. OTHER ITEMS A. Any member wishing to have an LPC library card was given a form to complete. After the form is processed, the library card will be mailed to the member.
