<P<Limy Very Old Dog, Cautious Carl, and I Want Thank Everyone for 15 GREAT YEARS s1

In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.

Well folks, this is a truly desirable example of a First Generation Gruen Curvex watch, a long and curved men’s 311 caliber Curvametric model that dates to 1937 and in excellent condition. The 311 caliber, introduced in 1935, was the first of four calibers used in the Curvex series and was followed by the 330 (in the fall of 1938), 440 and 370 respectively.

This triple-signed model measures a long 47mm lug tip to lug tip and 20mm in width (22mm with winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-7/8 inches long by ¾ of an inch wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel Gruen Curvex Precision mechanism, fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The ivory color, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, the original that has been professionally restored to its correct status. It features a 60 minute checkered outer chapter, raised gold Arabic-style numerals, original gold metal leaf-style hands and a separate seconds dial with recessed center and sweeping gold seconds hand. Signed GRUEN CURVEX below the 12 and PRECISION above the seconds dial. It is further signed SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial.

The new old stock curving solid glass crystal was made for this model and is in mint condition. The case is 10 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and is in excellent PLUS condition, with a nice curve when viewed in profile. I want to emphasize that this case has ZERO wear or scratches, very rare when it comes to gold filled Curvex watches. The gold-finished winding crown (that I believe to be original, they were not signed in 1937) is in excellent shape and operates smoothly.

Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent to MINT condition, this includes the back of the lugs as well. It is signed 10kt Gold Filled along the edge. Peeking inside I find a truly curved movement that is signed [Caliber] 311 - Gruen Watch Co. PRECISION, Seventeen 17 Jewels – Conoruma Hairspring & Balance, Switzerland - GXC. The inside of the case is signed Cased and Timed in USA by Gruen Watch Co., 255 with case number below. Please note that number 255 is the dial series number.

Fully cleaned, oiled and regulated just prior to auction, this fine timepiece winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new 14mm men’s black lizard grain leather strap with gold finished buckle that will fit a wrist 6-1/4 inches to 8 inches in size. So there you have it folks, that LONG Gruen Curvex you have always wanted to own and this one has case that is in primo condition. If you think the photos look okay then you will be very happy when you see it in person as it is a LOT nicer!!

Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the Long Meadows (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the best of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.

I am very happy to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a ladies 14kt Solid White Gold LINK case cocktail model that dates to ca 1958. This is the first time I have ever come across this long case model; note the flexible, hinged lugs that bend in BOTH directions, ensuring a comfortable fit on the wrist. This midcentury, Retro-Modern watch is in excellent condition and is quadruple signed for Longines, on the dial, winding crown, case and mechanism.

Its solid 14k white gold case measures along 58mm lug tip to lug tip and 15mm in width (17mm with original, Longines-signed winding crown). This works out to be 2-1/4 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide, not including the crown. It is attached to what appears to be its original Gemex, USA 10k white gold filled mesh cord bracelet that makes the total length 6-5/8 inches. If you need this longer I can also provide a black cord vintage bracelet strap of any length. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Longines mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The ivory color, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, the original that has been professionally restored to its correct status. Features include applied white gold hour markers and numerals and original silver metal Lance-style hands. Signed LONGINES below the 12 marker and SWISS at the base of the dial.

The crystal is in excellent condition and clear. The case is a two-piece design that is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and in excellent PLUS shape, complete with hinged V shaped lugs that swivel up and down for the perfect, comfortable fit around your wrist. I have never seen this watch model before and I have to say it is one of the nicest Mid-Century designs I have seen, more akin to a LeCoultre design from the same period. The original winding crown is a matching white gold finish, signed with the Longines trademark (winged hourglass) and in flawless shape, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I find that the 14k solid gold back lid is in excellent (like new) shape, stamped 14K at one edge. Inside is a fully serviced, manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss, 17 Jewels [Grade] 4LLV with serial number 10,265,679, dating the watch to circa 1958. The inside case is stamped LONGINES WITTNAUER WATCH CO. INC, NEW YORK, GENEVA, MONTREAL, K&L 14K, [Model] 609 590. I can guarantee that this watch is 14k solid white gold, as stamped.

This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with its original 10k white gold filled mesh bracelet band that will fit up to a 6-5/8 inch wrist. I can also supply a black cord bracelet of any length for the winner if you need it longer. Ladies and gentlemen, if you have ever wanted an immaculate, unique, midcentury Longines watch this is the one. I have seen and sold untold numbers of 1950s cocktail watches but nothing like this before.

Among watch collectors, the Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland, a firm founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in 1848, is one of the most renowned brands of timepieces. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then it has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy. Omega is my favorite Swiss watch firm as well, combining those qualities of name brand recognition, high quality and relative value that are important to the seasoned watch collector.

Omega strongly reaffirmed its position as a collector’s brand in 2007 when Antiquorum held its Omegamania theme sale in Geneva, Switzerland. The prices realized vastly exceeded pre-auction estimates and set new records for many older models. Yes folks, good vintage Omega watches are only going UP in value.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s Omega timepiece, a pinched case, Tank form example in 14kt Yellow Gold Fill that dates to ca 1955. Before I continue I want to ensure you that this case is in FLAWLESS condition, anything that suggests otherwise are shadows or glare.

Quadruple-signed, it measures 37mm end to end and 27mm in width (including the original gold Omega- signed crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches long by just shy of 1- 1/8 inches wide across the lugs. It is powered by its original 302 grade, 17 jewel, manual wind mechanism, fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure accurate timekeeping.

The silver color, enamel finished dial is in flawless condition, professionally restored to its correct status. It features applied gold hour markers, original gold metal Dauphine style hands and a separate, recessed seconds dial with original sweep gold seconds hand. Signed OMEGA below the 12 with trademark solid gold Omega symbol and SWISS at the base of the dial.

The hardened acrylic crystal is curved on all four sides and in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece, Omega-signed case is 14kt Yellow Gold filled and in excellent to mint condition, absolutely flawless. Note the flared lugs and PINCHED case, a design I have not seen before. The original Omega-signed gold winding crown is in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent to mint condition like the rest of the watch – no wear or engravings past or present. Inside I find a rose gold finished manual wind mechanism signed Omega Watch Co., SWISS, Seventeen 17 Jewels, [Grade] 302, OXG. The serial number of #14,970,334 dates the watch to ca 1955 as per company production records. The inside of the case lid is stamped OMEGA WATCH CO., N-6258, D20242, 14K. GOLD FILLED with the Jonell Watch Case Co. trademark stamp below.

This fine watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new and high quality 19mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold finished buckle. All in all an investment-grade, Omega pinched case Tank watch that is as beautiful today as when it left the Omega factory almost 60 years ago.

I have always appreciated higher grade, quality timepieces from respected but lesser known Swiss makers . This is one such example, an original men’s automatic wind mid 1960s SOCIETY model from the Ernest Borel Watch Co. of Switzerland, established in 1859 and located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. This Mad Men era timepiece features the date aperture at the 6 position, rather unique.

Quadruple-signed for Ernest Borel, its all stainless steel case measures 37mm lug tip to lug tip and 34.5mm in width (37.5mm with crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-3/4 inches in total length by just shy of 1-3/8 inches wide, not including the winding and setting crown. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original and higher grade rose gold finished Ernest Borel signed (ETA 2522 calibre), 17 jewel rotor automatic mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in pristine condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory almost 50 years ago. It features a 60 second outer chapter, faceted white gold finished hour indicators, (semi- quickset) DATE window at the 3 position, original silver steel baton-style hands with tritium fill and a center sweep silver seconds hand. Signed ERNEST BOREL below the 12 and Society above the date window. It is further signed Swiss T at the base of the dial, the T standing for tritium.

The original hardened acrylic armored crystal (it has a metal ring inside) is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece, Borel-signed case is solid stainless steel and in excellent to mint condition – truly without any flaws. The stainless winding crown is excellent as well, winding and setting as it should.

Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is a stainless steel screw-down model that is excellent overall shape, just a scratch or two from opening and closing. It is stamped 74796 707061. Peeking inside I find a clean rose (pink) gold finished movement signed Ernest Borel – Seventeen 17 Jewels, Swiss. Below the balance it is stamped with the caliber number ETA 2522. The inside of the case lid is signed ERNEST BOREL & CO., S.A., SWISS MADE, STAINLESS STEEL. This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Like most automatic watches, this watch is a dual winder, meaning you can wind it up manually or by the shake of your wrist. If you are new to self-winding watches from this era the rule of thumb is to give it 10 or so turns of the crown before strapping onto to your wrist, thereby building up the power reserve. The DATE function is semi-quickset so you can advance an entire day by taking the shortcut of moving the hands past midnight and then back to 9pm (and repeat) for each calendar day you want to advance. It comes fitted on a new 17mm deBeer black lizard grain calf leather strap with steel buckle so you are all set. Most likely my sleeper of this week, a high-quality, original watch by a respected Swiss maker in excellent shape.

The watchmaker Jacques Didisheim Goldschmidt had his eyes on the future when he founded his factory in 1860. Sensing better opportunities, he soon moved to La Chaux-de- Fonds. Jacques' son, Bernard, founded the Juvenia Watch Co. of Switzerland into a manufacturing enterprise.

Modern production methods were evidenced by calibers with base plates, bars and bridges of standard pattern. In 1914, the Juvenia watch brand introduced the smallest movement constructed on a single level, with a diameter of 9.5 mm for a height of 2.5 mm. Juvenia went on to contribute to the history of the wristwatch with extraordinary case designs and unique time indications, and was truly one of the finest watches in the world at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Mystere model that is for sale here was first introduced in 1940 in a round case design, complete with its unique cover over the arbor for the hands. This is a ladies 1960s Scalloped Case, Mustache Lugs mystery dial model, the first that I have ever come across that was not tonneau, round or cut corner in shape. It is also quadruple-signed for Juvenia on the dial, case, winding crown and mechanism.

I> ts 14kt Yellow Gold electroplated case measures 33.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 22mm in width (23.5mm with original Juvenia signed crown). This works out to be 1-5/16 inches long by 7/8 of an inch wide. It is powered by a high quality, Juvenia-signed 17 jewel, manual wind mechanism visible via a display back lid. It winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The original watch dial is a cutaway example that is in excellent, untouched since it left the factory. It is signed JUVENIA and SWISS, as shown. The outer dial shows the gold hour markers that have the effect of floating within the body of the watch and the hands feature RED arrow tips.

The original crystal is in excellent shape and has been hand polished. The case is 14 Karat Gold electroplated to 20 microns (a high quality finish and stamped as such on the case sides), in excellent condition and featuring MUSTACHE lugs juxtaposed against a scalloped case design. On the side it is stamped Juvenia Mfg. Swiss. The original winding crown has a raised J for Juvenia and is in great shape, operating smoothly.

Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is a clear crystal like the front, exposing the movement. It is clear and free of any scratches, the gold bezel in excellent shape as well. The movement is signed Juvenia Mfg., Swiss, Seventeen 17 Jewels, HWC.

This watch has been fully serviced prior to auction to ensure it runs very well and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new 10mm black Kreisler crocodile (grain) calf leather strap with gold buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. These Juvenia Mystere dial watches are a lot of fun to collect, much like the Ernest Borel Kaleidoscope cocktail watches. Being a unique Mustache lug, Scallped bezel model makes it that much cooler as I have never seen one like it in 28 years of collecting.

Founded in 1889 by Georges Ducommun in Le Locle, the Doxa Watch Company of Switzerland has always found a place amongst collectors of high quality watches that are perhaps lesser known than the big brands, much like Mido, Zodiac or Eterna. I have always thought of Doxa providing the elegance of an IWC or Vacheron & Constantin but at a much more affordable price!

I am pleased to offer for sale the following original timepiece from the firm, a vintage men’s model from the mid 1950s in great, original condition. This elegant, midcentury watch is triple-signed for Doxa, on the dial, mechanism and case.

Its chromium steel case measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 35mm in width (37mm with original, recessed crown). This works out to be just over 1-5/8 inches in length by 1-3/8 inches in width, not including the winding crown. It is powered by its original Doxa manual wind (11-1/2 Ligne, Caliber 14) seventeen jewel mechanism, fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The 100% original silver matte enamel finished metal dial is in excellent shape, some light specks of age but showing very nicely. It features a 60 second outer track border, raised gold numerals and arrow shaped hour indicators, original gold metal Leaf-style hands and a sweep original gold center seconds hand. Signed DOXA 17 JEWELS below the 12 and ANTIMAGNETIC above the 6.

The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition, a recent addition. The case is a three-piece example that is chromium steel with a stainless steel back lid and is in great to excellent condition, very clean. The winding crown is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I note that the vacuum seal, snap down solid stainless steel lid is signed with the reference numbers 4757960. It is in excellent condition.

Inside is a clean, 17 Jewel, manual wind movement signed DOXA, 17 JEWELS, SWISS with ligne size & caliber number 11 ½ C14 stamped under the balance wheel. The inside of the engine-turned case lid is signed FOND ACIER INOXYDABLE, DOXA, SWISS MADE.

This fine timepiece has been fully serviced by my certified watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 17mm brown deBeer Europa alligator grain strap with matching chrome steel buckle for a fine combination. All in all a watch that will get noticed on your wrist not for its flashiness but for its timeless elegance, one that will never go out of style.

            • Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I treat buyers as I like to be treated: with courtesy and respect. I am especially proud of my excellent feedback and high number of repeat clients.

My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois (the factory had a National Street address). It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.

Elgin would offer its first watch for sale in 1867, marking the beginning of fierce competition with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.

I am pleased to offer for sale this truly STELLAR example of a top-of-the-line, 21 jewel Lord Elgin flared lug watch. It is a 14kt Solid Yellow Gold Model 4533 from 1952, in pristine shape and featuring solid 14k gold numbers and hour markers.

This triple-signed watch measures 36mm end to end and 23mm in width at its widest, just over 1- 3/8” long by 7/8” wide. It has been fully serviced by my certified watchmaker David and its top-of-the-line 21 jewel, fully adjusted mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The elegant black enamel finished, Retro Modern style dial is in MINT condition, professionally restored to its correct original status. Features include applied 14k solid gold numerals and arrow-shaped hour markers, original gold metal Lance-style hands and a separate diamond shaped seconds dial with sweep gold seconds hand. Signed Lord Elgin below the 12 with the dp logo below this, the latter standing for DURAPOWER, the company’s patented unbreakable mainspring.

The gently domed, solid glass crystal is in excellent condition, removed in some photos to avoid glare. The case is a curved and streamlined, featuring flared lugs and crafted of 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold. It is in excellent to- mint condition with absolutely NO flaws. The original winding crown (correctly unmarked) is a matching yellow gold finished and in excellent order, operating smoothly.

Turning the watch over I note that the back lid has zero wear or engravings (past or present) and is stamped 14 Karat Gold. Inside is a high-grade, Twenty One Jewel, fully adjusted movement, signed ELGIN [Grade] 670, USA, 21 JEWELS ADJ’D with serial number P312652 (dating it to ca 1952). The inside back lid is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., Star Watch Case Co., 14 Karat Gold, [Model] 4533 with case/serial number below.

This disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated Lord Elgin timepiece winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 17mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold (finished) buckle for a fine combination. Please feel free to place a bid (or two) as I am pretty confident that you’re going to like this vintage, all American watch when it arrives!

The history of the Girard-Perregaux Watch Company begins in 1791, when the watchmakers Bautte and Mouline founded a factory in Geneva to manufacture watches. In 1856 the watchmaker constant Girard married Marie Perregaux and the unified firm of Girard and Perregaux came into being.

In 1906 Perregaux acquired the earlier firm of Bautte and Mouline, and today the firm is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. They have always made a name for themselves in the realm of wristwatches through their unique creativity and high quality mechanisms, one of a select few who produce many of its movements entirely in-house. Today, Girard Perregaux watches are among the most expensive timepieces you can buy, making the vintage models a sound investment.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from Girard Perregaux, a ladies 14kt Solid White Gold & Diamonds vintage dress model that dates to the mid 1950s and is in excellent original condition. This is what is described as an evening or cocktail watch and it is quadruple-signed for Girard-Perregaux (on the dial, winding crown, case and mechanism).

It measures 30mm lug tip to lug tip and 14.5mm in width (16.3mm with original GP-signed winding crown). This works out to be 1-3/16 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide (without original crown) and it is fitted on a black cord bracelet that measures a total length of just over 7-1/2 inches (I can size this larger or smaller for the winner at no cost). It is powered by its original and high grade, 17 jewel manual wind Girard-Perregaux mechanism that has been fully serviced by my certified, professional watchmaker David prior to auction to ensure it is running very well and keeping accurate time.

The ivory color, matte enamel dial is in excellent condition and features applied white gold hour markers and original silver steel Lance-style hands. Signed Girard Perregaux below the 12.

The gently domed crystal is in excellent, clear condition, removed in some photos to avoid glare. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and in excellent PLUS shape. The highlight are the lugs, featuring Six [6] Genuine Diamonds of high clarity. The white gold finished winding crown is signed (in raised letters) GP for Girard-Perregaux and in excellent condition, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent order, retaining its original brushed (satin) finish and free of any wear or engravings. It is stamped 14K GOLD. Inside I find a clean, manual wind mechanism that is signed Girard-Perregaux, Swiss, Seventeen 17 Jewels, GXM. The inside case lid is stamped B2046, G/P, ROSS with case number below. The GP stands for the company and the name Ross is for the case maker who made the case for Girard Perregaux.

This watch has been cleaned, oiled & regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a vintage new old stock black cord band that will fit a wrist up to 7-1/2 inches in size and I can easily make it smaller (or larger) at no charge. All in all a clean, ready to wear original mid-century cocktail watch from one of Switzerland’s best watch companies. My photos do NOT do her justice.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following men's Omega timepiece, an excellent and originalSEAMASTER 600 calendar model from ca 1966. This quadruple-signed model features an excellent and untouched original dial and venerable 601 caliber mechanism, the latter being engineered and fabricated completely in-house by Omega.

Its 14kt Rose Gold Electroplated case (also known as pink gold) measures 40mm lug tip to lug tip and 35mm in width (37mm with unmarked winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-5/8 inches long by 1- 3/8 inches wide, not counting the crown. It has been fully serviced to ensure its seventeen jewel, two adjustment, manual wind mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The 100% original silver, finely brushed enamel finish dial is in pristine condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the Omega factory. Features include a 60 second outer chapter, raised rose gold finished hour markers, rose gold finished hands with tritium inserts and ‘sweep’ gold center seconds hand. Signed OMEGA with raised rose gold trademark Omega symbol below the 12 and Seamaster 600 above the 6. It is further signed T SWISS MADE T at the base of the dial.

The original, Omega-signed hardened acrylic (armored) crystal is in excellent overall condition with just a few fine scratches hard to see with the naked eye. This crystal is indeed signed, with a tiny OMEGA symbol in the center, visible with a magnifying loupe only. The original two-piece Omega Seamaster case features a 14 Karat Rose Gold Electroplated case with a 40 micron thickness, double what was normal in the 1960s. It is in excellent shape with no brassing or wear. The unmarked winding crown is a later replacement (albeit vintage) in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I find that the screw-down back lid is stainless steel and marked with the Seamaster logo in finely engraved detail. This lid is in excellent condition with no personal engravings and just a couple light scratches. Inside I find a spotless rose gold finished mechanism that is signed Omega Watch Co., Swiss [Caliber] 601, Seventeen 17 Jewels – Adjusted Two (2) Positions. The serial number is #23,704,107, dating the watch to ca 1966 as per published Omega production records (these records are accurate +/- one to two years). The inside of the case back is finely engine turned and signed OMEGA WATCH CO., FAB. SUISSE, SWISS MADE, CARRURE LUNETTE, PLAQUE ORG 40 MICRONS, FOND ACIER IN OXYDABLE, 135.011 with the Compressor logo below.

This watch has been fully serviced so you can be assured that it winds and sets smoothly while keeping very accurate time. It comes fitted on new, high quality 18mm black deBeer Paris lizard grain, handcrafted leather strap with matching ROSE gold finished, unmarked buckle. Whether it be a Seamaster or Constellation all watch lovers need to have at least one Omega in his or her collection. I think the understated (timeless) elegance of this pristine example is worth a second (or fourth) look.

I have always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. By 1922, the name Bulova would begin to appear on watch dials across the country and the firm would be the first in the industry in the total standardization of parts.

If you are looking for an excellent Art Deco watch this is a very pretty choice, a lady's BERNICE model from Bulova that dates to 1929. I cannot imagine any watch better representing the style of the 1920s and this one is truly excellent original condition.

Triple-signed, its white gold filled case measures 32mm end to end and 17mm in width (21mm with original cabochon sapphire crown). This works out to be 1-1/4 inches long by 5/8 wide, not counting the winding crown. It is fitted on a 10mm black Hadley Roma matte finish leather strap that will fit a wrist 5-1/4 inches to 6-3/4 inches in size. It has just returned from being fully serviced by my Bulova-trained watchmaker David prior to auction and its original 15 jewel, manual wind Swiss mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The 100% original sterling silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, untouched since it left the factory 84 years ago. It features a 60 minute inner track border, black enameled Arabic style numerals and original blued steel Spade-style hands. Note the finely engraved center dial, what detail! Signed BULOVA below the 12 and embossed Swiss at the base of the dial, below the bezel.

The solid glass crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece, hinged back case is a Bulova Quality stamped white gold filled example and it is a tour de force of Art Deco engraved designs on the bezel AND case sides. Case condition is excellent. There was a similar model to this called the RONA and it had an engraved bezel whereas the Bernice has plain, non-engraved bezel panels. The original cabochon sapphire winding crown is excellent, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is finely engraved with a feather design border and is free of any personal engravings or scratches, in excellent, crisp condition. Peeking inside via the hinged back lid I note that the movement is protected by its own crystal and bezel, a very useful feature of many 1920s Bulova watches (called the Dust-Tite Protector) that protected it from dust and debris. The movement is a clean, Tonneau- shaped, manual wind model signed Bulova Watch Co., [Caliber] 6AF, Fifteen 15 Jewels, Swiss. There is also a date code symbol on the movement that tells me it was produced in 1929. The inside of the case lid is stamped BULOVA QUALITY, PAT. JUNE 10, 1924 with case number below.

This cleaned, oiled & regulated watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a 10mm matte black leather Hadley Roma strap with matching color buckle that will fit wrists5-1/4 to 6-3/4 inches in size.Folks, this is simply a beautiful Jazz Age timepiece, give this pretty gem a chance and she will be a happy ticker on your wrist!

Founded by Ariste Calame in the City of Le Locle in 1882, the Zodiac Watch Co. of Switzerland has long been a sought-after watch amongst collectors, especially those who appreciate vintage sport and diving watches. The Zodiac name was used very early on but was not registered until 1908.

The firm exhibited at the Basle Watch Show in 1949 with the Datagraphic, a calendar watch with moon phases and the Autographic, a self-winding model with visible power reserve indicator that was the official watch of the Swiss Federal Railways. By the late 1950s the Sea Wolf divers watch and Rotographic rotor automatic models would be introduced.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s watch from the firm, a store display SEADRAGON divers model in excellent, all original shape. This watch comes complete with its Zodiac-signed rubber sport strap (vintage Tropic style) with matching brushed steel Zodiac-signed buckle.

I cannot think of another all Swiss made dive watch that gives you more bang for your buck; the fit and finish is excellent, the smallest dial details very crisp. Being rated to 100 meters (330 feet) also means you can get this one wet, in the ocean, in the pool, you name it.

Quadruple-signed for Zodiac, its solid stainless steel case measures 44mm lug tip to lug tip, 14.3mm thick and 39mm in width (43mm with Zodiac-signed crown). This is a good size, large enough to have presence on your wrist but not too large where it feels like the watch is wearing you! I have a small to medium size wrist and find this size is perfect, anything larger would be a bit too much (we have all seen those folks that look like they are wearing hockey pucks!) It is powered by its original Zodiac precision Swiss quartz mechanism that keeps very accurate time.

The black enamel finished dial is in mint condition, featuring a black and white 60 second outer chapter (calibrated to 1/5 of a second), luminous hour markers, a quick change date window at the 6 position, original silver steel luminous hands and classic ORANGE center seconds hand. Signed ZODIAC 1882 below the company symbol and 100 METERS 330 FEET above the date window. It is further signed SWISS MADE at the base of the dial.

The hardened mineral glass crystal is in mint condition. The unidirectional timing bezel ratchets over nice and snugly. The two-piece case is a solid stainless steel of good weight, brushed (satin) finish along the bezel corners and polished on the sides. Just a couple light scratches from handling. The setting crown (used for date as well) features the Zodiac emblem and is excellent like the rest of the watch.

Turning the watch over you will see that the stainless, screw-down back lid is finely executed with an engraved Sea Dragon design in the center, very topnotch and quite impressive. I can only imagine that Zodiac was inspired by the Omega Seamaster when coming up with this model name. The lid is signed ZODIAC SEADRAGON ZO 2200, 100 METERS 330 FEET, SWISS MADE, 00867. As this watch has not been opened up I am not going to do so as this may compromise its waterproof qualities. Be assured, however, that there is a precision Swiss quartz mechanism inside that keeps spot- on, accurate time.

This timepiece comes with its original 20mm black rubber Tropic style band signed with the Zodiac logo on the underside and on the matching stainless steel buckle. It does NOT come with any box or papers, just the watch as you see it. A finely executed, heavy duty watch that is perfect for work, travel, the ocean -- where you want your wrist to look good but do not want to spend a lot (for Swiss quality) in the process. I have a Sea Dragon just like this and use it when I travel, I love it.

Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the long meadows (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the major players of the Swiss watch making profession, including its chief rival Omega.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s 14kt Solid Yellow Gold Tank form model with a 16 Genuine Diamonds on the dial. This triple-signed model dates to 1948 and is the LARGER of two diamond dial Longines models made during this period, the other, more narrow cased model introduced ca 1950 and featuring a 9L or 9LT caliber mechanism and just 13 diamonds on the dial.

The case on this example measures 39.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 24.5mm in width (26.5mm with winding crown). This works out to be a bit over 1-9/16 inches long by 1 inch wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, 22L grade manual wind Longines mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The antique white, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, the original dial that has been professionally restored (repainted) in the recent past. It features applied rhodium markers with genuine diamonds (including three each at the 3 and 9 positions), a 60 minute outer track border, original silver steel hands and a separate, recessed seconds dial with sweepingsilver steel seconds hand. Signed LONGINES below the double diamond 12 marker.

The raised and curved faceted acrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The case is a two-piece design that is 14 Karat Yellow Gold and it is in excellent to mint condition, complete with sculpted lugs. The condition is truly pristine, folks, not a flaw. The unmarked matching yellow gold finished winding crown is in excellent shape operates smoothly.

Turning the watch over I find that the 14k solid gold back lid is in excellent to flawless condition, no wear or engravings past or present. It is stamped K&L 14K at the opening lip. Looking inside I find a clean and fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss, Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 22L, LXW. The serial number is 7,594,016, dating the watch to ca 1948 as per available production records. The inside case is stamped LONGINES WITTNAUER WATCH CO., NEW YORK, GENEVA, MONTREAL – K&L 14K with case number below (the K&L is for the case maker Kammerer & Lutringer).

This large r size diamond dial Tank model has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 18mm black deBeer hand finished ostrich (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle. Folks, I have only had a couple of these larger size diamond dial models before and each time I have had one I have had a hard time not keeping it for myself. This watch shows even better in person and I know the winner is going to be very pleased.

I have always been a fan of watches with some form of complication, whether it be a chronograph, alarm watch or multiple date. This is one such example, an excellent and original vintage men’s Concentric Date model with wrist appeal to spare.

It was produced ca 1950 by the Benrus Watch Co. of New York, a firm established in 1923 by Benjamin Lazrus and his brothers. Benrus was long the chief rival of Bulova and, like its competitor, had its headquarters in New York City while also maintaining a watch factory was in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

This triple- signed, 10kt Yellow Rolled Gold plated watch measures 37mm end to end and 30mm in width (32mm with matching original, unmarked crown). This works out to just shy of 1-1/2 inches long by 1-3/16 inches wide, not including the crown. This was a normal gents size when made but would now be considered a smaller men’s size watch, ideal for the fellow who prefers a smaller watch or for a woman to wear. It is powered by its original and high quality 17 jewel, manual wind Benrus Swiss mechanism that has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, guaranteed to be untouched since it left the factory over 60 years ago. It is definitely the nicest original dial I have seen for this model.

Features include a 31 Day outer track border, raised gold Arabic numerals, original gold metal Leaf style hands, a blue steel DATE indicator hand with red arrow tip and a separate, recessed seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and engine-turned background. Signed BENRUS below the day of the week window and SWISS at the base of the dial.

The gently domed, acrylic crystal is in excellent condition and without flaw. The fancy lug case is in excellent condition, a 10 Karat Yellow Rolled Gold plated example that is Benrus- signed. The matching and original (correctly unmarked) gold finished winding crown is in excellent shape, winding and setting as it should.

Turning the watch over, I note that the stainless steel back lid is in excellent condition with just a few light scratches. It is stamped 10K ROLLED GOLD PLATE BEZEL, STAINLESS STEEL BACK, U.S. Patent No. 2581268 and with case number on the opposite edge. Peeking inside I find a high quality Seventeen jewel (ebauche ETA caliber) mechanism that is signed Benrus Watch Co. Inc., Seventeen 17 Jewels, Model CE13, Swiss AXZ. The inside case back is stamped CASED & TIMED IN THE USA BY THE BENRUS WATCH CO..

This retro modern, midcentury timepiece has been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes complete with a new 16mm black deBeer Paris lizard (grain) calf leather Swiss band with matching gold finished buckle. All in all an excellent, far above average example of a Benrus double date, concentric calendar watch – the nicest I have ever seen or sold before.

The name Hamilton was derived from Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the growth of Lancaster.

By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant watch and during the WWI period a small line of military style watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Hamilton timepiece, a men's Thinline model that dates to ca 1960. This hermetic design, one-piece case watch is in excellent, all original condition, only the 17mm deBeer watch strap is new. This Thinline was one of several styles unveiled by Hamilton in the 1960s, in tandem with the Thin- O-Matic, automatic wind models.

Quadruple-signed for Hamilton, its stainless steel, one-piece case measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width (35mm with original Hamilton-signed crown). This works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by just over 1-1/4 inches wide, not counting the original winding crown. It is powered by its original and high quality 17 jewel Hamilton Swiss made mechanism, fully serviced by my talented watchmaker David just last week to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The 100% original silver, satin enamel finished dial is in excellent condition with a light patina of age. It is guaranteed to be untouched since it left the factory. Features include raised silver hour markers that sit upon an engine-turned background, original silver steel Lance-style hands with tritium fill and a separate seconds dial with sweep seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12 and SWISS below the 6.

The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The one-piece case is Hamilton-signed and American made by the Star Watch Case Company. It is stainless steel and in excellent PLUS shape. The original Hamilton-signed, stainless steel winding crown is in excellent condition as well, winding and setting smoothly.

Turning the watch over I note that the back of the case is stamped Hamilton, Stainless Steel, Lifetime Mainspring, Shock Resistant, Waterproof.

As this watch is a one-piece design you access the mechanism by removing the crystal and then the stem/crown. I had my watchmaker take the photos inside and the mechanism is signed Hamilton Watch Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 676, Swiss, HYL The inside case lid is stamped HAMILTON W. CO., LANCASTER, PA, STAINLESS STEEL, STAR W.C. CO. with case number below.

This watch has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes complete with a new 17mm black deBeer Paris glove leather, hand finished leather strap with steel buckle for a great look. All in all a very fine watch for those who like fine mid- century watches in excellent original condition.

                            • Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I treat buyers as I like to be treated: with courtesy and respect. I am especially proud of my excellent feedback and high number of repeat clients.

Draw the measurements on paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, watches for men made from the 1910s to 1970s were noticeably smaller than what is considered normal today.
