Narrator : “You’re listening to the first podcast of Time Travel Talk Show. This show provides our audience with the opportunity to hear from different people who lived in New York State throughout history and present day. Each episode in this series will focus on the lives and perspectives of people who lived in different historical time periods. Welcome to the Time Travel Talk Show!”

Host: “Hello and welcome to the Time Travel Talk Show! On today’s episode, we have 2 guests. Our first guest is a 10-year old girl who lives in New Netherland, from the year 1774! Please help me in welcoming Felicity to the show!”

(Applause)

Host: “Welcome to the show Felicity!”

Felicity: “Greetings.”

Host: “Our next guest comes from present day 2010. She is a 9-year old student from P.S. 92 in Queens. Please give a warm welcome to Brianna!”

(Applause)

Brianna: “Wassup everybody?”

Host: “We are so excited to have you ladies here today! Now, let’s get started. Before you arrived today, we polled our audience, and what they really want to know is what makes your lives so different. Felicity, the first question is for you. What is school like for you in New Netherland?”

Felicity: “My school day is usually comprised of a couple of hours in the afternoon. My schoolhouse is a small building that only has one room. Mum and daddy have to pay my teacher for lessons, 3 pence each month! Daddy works in the fur trade, so we can usually afford this expense. I use a quill and parchment to write my essays. I use a hornbook to learn how to read. Doing my homework is quite difficult since I have to do it by candlelight after all of my chores are done and I’m usually quite tired.”

Host: “Wow! That sounds tough! Brianna, how about you?” 1 Marielle Crespo Podcast Script 3/20/2010

Brianna: “Geez Felicity, I can’t believe how different your school is! I’m so jealous you only have to go for a couple of hours though; I HAVE TO GO FOR 7 HOURS A DAY, 5 DAYS A WEEK! But, your school sounds kinda gross. I have a really big school building that has 4 floors and tons of rooms. All kids in 2010 have to go to school. So there are public schools that are free to make sure they can all go. I go to PS 92Q in Corona, which is in Queens. I use pencils, notebooks and the computer to do my homework. I never have a problem with light since we use electricity and light bulbs to work by… I could work all night if I wanted to!”

Felicity: “That sounds impossible! I would never be able to stay up so late. I’d be too tired from the day’s chores.”

Host: “Thanks Felicity, that brings me to my next question, what kinds of things do you have to do when you’re not at school? Brianna?”

Brianna (speaking quickly): “Well, when I’m not at school, I’m usually talking to my friends online, surfing the web or watching t.v. I love the Disney Channel!!! OMG, have you seen the new High School Musical movie? Zac Effron is soooo cute! I go to karate class 2 times during the week, afterschool of course. On weekends, I usually go on short trips with my parents on the subway to like a museum or something.”

Host: “What about you Felicity?”

Felicity: “It all sounds very frivolous if you ask me. In New Netherland, children are expected to rise before the sun, as soon as the rooster crows. We have to do many important chores like milk the cows or feed the chickens. Otherwise, it might not be possible for our families to eat! I also help mother prepare the meals, clean the house, and sew clothes for the family. Sometimes after church on Sundays, I can play marbles or hopscotch with my brothers and sisters.”

Host: “Well, it’s very clear that your lives are VERY different! It sounds like Felicity has to a lot more responsibilities in the chores she has to do to help her family. Brianna has to focus more on school, but has more time to have fun. I wish we could go on for hours, but my producers are telling me we’re out of time for today. Have a safe trip home everybody!”

Narrator: “Thank you for tuning to this episode of the Time Travel Talk Show. We hope you join us again soon.”
