Job Title Digital Media Technician

Reports to Head of Department

Job Purpose To provide efficient and effective support service in digital media and music skills appropriate to creative industry standards for the Visual Arts Department at Lewisham Southwark College

Principal Supporting teaching: Accountabilities  Demonstrate to students use of equipment and machinery as appropriate and as directed

 Demonstrate techniques and practical skills to students and supervise students in the Visual Arts area.

 Assist supervision of students’ learning activity within a studio/workshop

 Respond to and advise on students’ technical enquiries.

Resources, materials and equipment:

 Prepare materials, equipment and apparatus to meet course requirements, including demonstrations, practical work and examination requirements.

 Be responsible for the keeping and issuing of stores, monitoring stock levels, costing and ordering after obtaining appropriate clearance and authorisation using College systems

 Responsible for the regular cleaning, care and maintenance of equipment and keeping appropriate records. Repairing of tools and machinery to meet industry standards.

 Install, check and implement new equipment and resources and ensure correct operation

 Responsible for health and safety in the use of materials and equipment and for ensuring that guidelines and risk assessments are up to date

 To carry out portable appliance testing (PAT) of electronic equipment where required.

 To be responsible for the general maintenance of the fabric of the studios and other related spaces including ensuring that they are kept secure, safe and tidy.

Display:

 Set up and dismantle projects used on courses or shows when required. Reclaim usable materials and ensure safe disposal of waste.

 To document learner work and learner events including exhibitions.

Trips:

 Driving vans and minibuses as required, to assist in the transport of students, materials and equipment.

 Accompany staff and learners on trips.

Other:

 To attend department, team and other meetings when necessary.

 To ensure that all of the above are carried out in accordance with appropriate health and safety policies

 To be able to problem solve on a daily basis.

Education /  A Creative related degree, or an equivalent professional Qualifications qualification (E)

 Current health and safety training including a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) certificate (D)

 Hold a full UK-valid driving licence (D)

Knowledge  Have an awareness of health and safety requirements in the Creative Industry workshops (E)

 A good working knowledge of media and music processes and equipment (E)

 Knowledge of contemporary media practices (D)

 Knowledge of cross –disciplinary digital design processes (E)

Experience  Previous experience in the industry or in a school/FE College as a technician (E)

 Delivering demonstrations on equipment and techniques (E)

 Experience in the Creative Industries (D)

 Monitoring stock, managing stores, handling money and maintaining small budgets. (D)

Skills  Good levels of computer literacy including PC/MAC expertise and an excellent working knowledge of media and music software to include Adobe/ Final Cut Pro/Logic /Cubase /Reason /Ableton (E)

 Effective communication skills (E)

 Ability to prioritise, working effectively under pressure, to ensure deadlines are met (E)

 Ability in professional display and exhibiting of work (E)
