Oak Creek Lake News – April/May 2014

These Newsletters are issued bimonthly (every two months). All issues are posted to the Association’s website www.oakcreeklake.org.

The Oak Creek Lake Association (OCLA) was formed in May 2008 for the purpose of bringing about civic betterments and social improvements and promoting the common good and general welfare of the people and community surrounding the area of Oak Creek Lake, a lake owned by the City of Sweetwater Texas. OCLA is a community social welfare organization under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code (a tax-exempt organization).

Membership in the OCLA is limited to those who lease (or own) property around Oak Creek Lake.

We encourage those eligible to become a member of the Association and do so by submitting their dues (set at $20 for the year beginning May 17, 2014) to P.O Box 376, Blackwell, TX 79506. On the website under the “About Us” tab is a form to submit with your dues. Dues are generally not deductible for income tax purposes.

RECENT EVENTS:

Water News:

Oak Creek Lake is about 24 feet low and still headed down. No recent rains; less than a quarter of an inch since January 1, 2014. The Cites of Sweetwater, Bronte and Robert Lee continue to use lake water as their primary drinking water source.

Annual Membership Meeting:

Association By-Laws require an Annual Meeting to be held May of each year with written notice provided to membership no less than 14 but no more than 30 days before the meeting date. Notice to meet this requirement will be forthcoming.

The Board has determined that the Annual Meeting date will be Saturday, May 17, 2014.

The Board has also set the annual dues (for 2014-2015) for members to be $20.00. Per the By-Laws, dues expire on the day before the Annual Meeting unless renewed on or before the day of the Annual Meeting. The By-Laws also provide for payment of the new dues year within the 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. Multiple lot holders need only pay for one (1) lot. The dues year coming up will be May 17, 2014 thru May XX, 2015 (as the date of the Annual Membership Meeting in 2015 in not yet known).

The Board has established the annual Nominating Committee (as required by the By-Laws) which will present to the Annual Meeting a list of nominees for the 2014/2015 year’s Officers and Directors. Gene Millsap is the Chairman of that Committee.

News You Can Use:

Beautify Blackwell:

While the lake lot lessee is responsible for obtaining all trash services individually, limited other services are also available to lessees. There are currently no Coke County trash sites for brush, limbs, tires, batteries, etc.

The City of Blackwell has scheduled its annual cleanup day for Saturday, April 12, 2014. The west side of the Blackwell School (same area as last couple of years) will be probable dump site.

Anyone not a resident of Blackwell proper can bring things for disposal directly to site for a reasonable financial contribution.

Recognizing that Oak Creek Lake lot holders may not have equipment to move items to the disposal site, the City will act as coordinator for arranging transport from Lake to disposal site. City designated contacts are:

 City Hall 325.282.2082 (is not “manned” so keep trying for contact)  Laura Rozzlle 325.236.0469  Tommy White 325.370.1119

A limited number of lake folks can arrange for their stacked or piled trash to be picked up and taken away on the Cleanup Day (again, for a reasonable financial contribution). You must call and arrange in advance for this to occur. First come, first served. The cleanup lasts only one day. Be sure to identify yourself as an Oak Creek lot holder. You must have an identifiable lake address for the team to find you on the lake… a visit to your site by team members may occur before the day of the Cleanup.

No “day to day household” trash. Will accept pretty much everything else: tree limbs and yard trimmings; tires; batteries; building materials; appliances; metal scraps; furniture; cars; boats; paint; if in doubt, call Blackwell City Hall in advance (325.282.2082). City Hall is not “manned” all day, so be prepared to leave a message and get a returned call… be sure to identify yourself as an Oak Creek lot holder.

Those who would volunteer their equipment or labor to the City of Blackwell for the cleanup should arrive at the Blackwell Riding Arena around 7:30am on April 12th.
