The Bush Club Inc Winter Walks Program – June 2012 to August 2012

Thank you leaders… for a great program of winter walking. The contribution and effort by every single leader is greatly appreciated. There are some excellent trips from new leaders (marked in bold italics) that are very worthy of your support. Every one of them is around Sydney and accessible by public transport.  Paul Shea has a classic coastal walk grade 2 on Thursday 7 June from Collaroy to Manly – a walk with spectacular coastal scenery.  Maryann Russett is leading an easy grade 2 walk around Middle Harbour on Monday 18 June, all on tracks and streets.  Andy Briscoe has a walk from North Turramurra to Berowra within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park on Saturday 14 July (grade 3).  Trevor McAlister has a unique walk discovering hidden Sydney on Tuesday 7 August. He describes it as an easy grade 2 “amble”!

A walk of note… In September, Ian Thorpe, supported by a couple of other Bush Club members, is planning a walk traversing the Wollemi National Park from north to south. This epic trip is expected to take three weeks, and will start at the Goulburn River and finish at Bilpin. Ian’s route will be totally within the National Park, and not cross private inholdings. While walkers regularly cross the Wollemi in an east-west direction, a north-south traverse requires a crossing of numerous rivers, creeks and canyons which dissect the Park. As far as we know, this will be the first recorded north-south traverse of the entire Wollemi. We wish Ian well in his planning, and will watch his progress with interest. All walkers… with The Bush Club are all considered to be fully independent and self sufficient participants. Remember each of us is individually accountable for our own safety, and need to have with us our own food, water, first aid, clothing and safety gear (matches, torch, rain gear, etc), together with anything else the leader may request. On many walks, bringing a map and compass and using them is a good idea. Unlike a commercial walk, don’t expect your leader to carry all these things for you. Remember our leaders are volunteers. They are our guides, and they bring their training, experience and judgment to bear in planning, organising and conducting the walk. It is your choice to participate in the walk, and you do so voluntarily fully aware there may be risks (both known and unknown) that may be involved. Where you need to contact leaders, it is their choice as to whether they accept you on a walk or not. Leaders… are the essence of our Club, and without their support and commitment there would not be a walks program to offer. Questions have been asked about why new leaders are being sought when some of the walks we have may not be well supported. This is because as our membership continues to grow and experienced leaders retire, we will always be seeking to recruit new leaders. The Club is only as strong as our leaders, and the future of the Club depends on the encouragement, nurturing and development of new leaders. However the indicators are that we have some catching up to do. Over the past two years, we have seen both a reduction in the total number of walks offered, and attendances on some walks that can only be described as very large. Where members are required to contact the leader, we have some walks that fill very quickly, and consequently attract a wait list. As a consequence of this, some leaders are starting to include in their walk description the words expressions of interest sought, ultimately giving them the choice as who whom they take, and indicating that some members may miss out. On the other hand, there are walks that do not attract sufficient members to qualify as a Club activity. This appears to occur for a number of reasons, but no single one is clearly evident. The committee is looking at this, and is attempting to identify what makes some walks popular and oversubscribed. The findings need to be quantified and communicated for the guidance of all leaders, and discussed more fully at leaders training days.

President: Lynne Outhred 9484 2657 Secretary: Carol Henderson 9879 6709 Walks Secretary: John Cooper 9449 7369 Treasurer: Barbara Mitchell 9644 1842 Membership Secretary: Kevin Yeats 9416 3526 Web Site: www.bushclub.org.au GENERAL: Walkers should carry a small first aid kit, matches and torch, and come suitably equipped with strong walking shoes, a rucksack, hat, rain gear, and water. Members are also encouraged to carry map and compass and become proficient in their use. With experience gained in club walks it is hoped that members will become walks leaders and/or office-bearers. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Phone 131 500 to check train, bus and ferry times. Timetables are sometimes altered at short notice. If the train is not running to timetable or if there is any doubt, contact the leader. Traditionally, Bush Club members travel in the second railway carriage from front, upper level, unless otherwise advised. ENQUIRIES: Enquiries about a walk should be directed to the leader. In times of bush fires, check news services and/or NPWS re closures of parks or access roads. Do phone the leader if you are unsure.

GUIDE TO GRADING OF WALKS M Qualifying All walks marked ‘M’ are membership qualifying walks. Generally, this applies to all walks grade 3 and higher, but there are exceptions. Do Check! However, prospective members may attend any walk with the leader’s consent. LTW Leadership Training Walk The leader is available to instruct aspiring leaders in techniques of walks leadership. SEA Support, Encourage, Achieve The leader promotes an encouraging and supportive environment – a team effort. Grade 1 (Easy) Opportunity for large number of walkers, including those with reduced walking ability to walk on well marked and even tracks. Tracks are man made and may have a few steps. Should not be steep. Suitable for beginners. Distance should not exceed about 10km. Grade 2 (Easy-Medium) Easy walk, mostly on tracks of low gradient. Opportunity to walk easily in natural environments on well marked tracks. Tracks should not be steep. Distance should not exceed about 15km. Grade 3 (Medium) Medium walk with some hilly sections and/or rougher terrain. Opportunity to walk on defined and distinct tracks with some steep sections requiring a moderate level of fitness. Suitable for fit beginners. Distance should not exceed about 20km. Grade 4 (Medium-Hard) Steeper, rougher terrain and may have off-track sections (no more than one quarter of the walk) or a longer distance track walk. Opportunity to explore and discover relatively undisturbed natural environments mostly along defined and distinct tracks. Tracks can be steep. There may be short sections of rock scrambling involved. Leaders should have map reading abilities and/or ability to use a compass. Distance depending on circumstances. Not suitable for most beginners. Grade 5 (Hard) Off-track or difficult terrain. Opportunity for walkers with advanced outdoor knowledge and skills to find their own way along often indistinct tracks or off track in remote locations. May include steep sections of unmodified surfaces. There may be rock scrambling, creek walking and crossing involved. Distance should not exceed 30km, but may be short and difficult. Not suitable for beginners. Grade 6 (Very Hard) Strenuous off-track walk or very long distance. Opportunity for highly experienced walkers to explore remote and challenging natural areas without reliance on managed tracks. Terrain may be steep, uneven and no track. There may be rock scrambling, creek walking and crossing involved. Distance covered is unlimited, but may be short and difficult. Only for experienced walkers and not suitable for beginners. CAR COST SHARE: The rate is 33c per km divided by the number of car occupants, including the driver. LEADERS: All day walks must be held unless conditions are unsafe. A minimum of four (4), including leader, is required for a Club walk. If there are fewer than four, including leader, a walk, if continued, is not an official Club activity and is not covered by insurance. If a leader is unable to lead his/her walk, he/she should arrange for a substitute leader and inform the Walks Secretary accordingly. The leader (or substitute) must travel to the starting point of the walk. See list of volunteer substitute leaders on last page of the walks program. PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS: Prospective members are required to seek the leader’s agreement to participate in any walk; they are advised to commence with Medium Grade 3 walks (or easier if new to bushwalking). VISITORS: Visitors including children are welcome to take part in walks only if invited by a full member (who must be present on the walk) and subject to the leader’s prior approval. Approval should be requested by the member, not the visitor. A leader has the right to refuse to take visitors on walks. Visitors will be granted temporary club membership to enable them to take part in the activity. SEARCH AND RESCUE: Contact the police or other emergency agency only if life or limb is endangered. In the event of a party being overdue, or some other incident, please ‘phone the following Bush Club contacts – Graham Conden 0418 647 951, Keith Maxwell 9622 0049 or Dick Weston 4753 1003. Contact may also be made with the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue by phoning 0427 455 897. Wait for the delayed response of the phone transfer system.
