Name: ______# ______Date: ______Designing a Flower Bed Project Directions: Designing a flower bed is more work than one might think. Each flower must have a certain amount of space, sunlight, and water to live vibrantly. Your job is to create a perfect flower bed design using information you gather from research and your mathematical understanding of the coordinate plan. Below is written directions that will help you work through this project.
1. Gardeners need to complete research on flowers they want in their flower bed. Therefore, the gardener needs to complete the ITEM SUMMARY. The item summary requires the gardener to know the appropriate spacing, the color/season, whether or not it is a perennial or an annual, and the cost of the flowers.
2. Next, the Gardener needs to think about design. Locations of plants are important for the visual effect and the health of the plants. Using the item summary, the gardener will complete a rough draft of their flower bed design using a COORDINATE PLANE. It is important when choosing a location to use a coordinate plane to precisely place plants (meaning to place the plant directly on the intersecting lines).
3. Once the rough draft of the design is completed, the gardener must complete the PLANT LOCATION handout. This handout will allow the gardener to see the exact location on the coordinate plane.
4. After the location handout is completed, the gardener must also calculate the distance between each plant to make sure the spacing required for a healthy plant is met. This can be completed on the PLANT DISTANCE handout.
5. After the handouts discussed in steps 1 - 4 are completed, checked and/or corrected, the gardener will then complete their final design using a FINAL COORDINATE PLANE. This design must be very neat.
6. Lastly, the gardener must complete the checklist to ensure the garden plan and design is completed.
Once the Garden design is completed, the gardener will turn in the design on the due date. Name: ______# ______Date: ______Designing a Flower Bed Check-List Completed Handout Title Due Date Y/N

Directions: Complete each section for each flower plant in the flower bed design. Include a detail description for spacing, color, season, annual or perennials, cost per item, and total cost. Must contain 10 items. Spacing Annual or Cost per Number of Plant Name Season Color Total Cost Information Perennial plant plants Example: Marigolds They should be Bloom from Variety of Annual – They $1.99 6 $11.94 planted at least summer to first colors will have to be 18 inches apart frost. re-planted each because they year. grow to be 6 in. – 18 in. in size.
