GOTHIC POETRY

Objectives 1. To read and identify Gothic elements of poetry 2. To illustrate gothic images from poetry and use citations from the poem as captions

Activity #1 Distribute and read aloud Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabelle Lee.” Students follow along while underlining specific passages that seem to have a gothic “feel” to them. Create three columns on the front board (Plot, Imagery, Other Figurative Language) and have students make note of at least two examples where Poe’s use of these devices lent a gothic air to the poem. Students share responses and write them under the appropriate categories on the front board.

Activity #2 Divide class into four groups and give each group copies of one of these four poems: “The Grave” by Robert Blair “The Fatal Sisters” by Thomas Gray “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” by Thomas Gray “The Conqueror Worm” by Edgar Allan Poe You may also choose other poems instead.

NOTE: The poems are included in their entirety in this unit plan.

Students will repeat the exercise done as a large group within their small groups. They will read the poem assigned to their group, underlining it for its gothic elements. They will create a chart that lists at least three examples (with cited line numbers) of each: plot, imagery, and other figurative language.

Students will EACH illustrate a DIFFERENT image from the poem and copy the line from the poem onto their drawing as a caption.

Groups will share findings by providing a BRIEF plot summary of the poem for their classmates, point out the gothic elements from the group’s chart, and each person will share his/her illustration and explain how it supports the poet’s use of gothic elements in the poem.

. “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee;-- And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea; But we loved with a love that was more than love-- I and my Annabel Lee-- With a love that the wingéd seraphs in Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her high-born kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre, In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me-- Yes!--that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. Some flee the city, some the hermitage; Their aims as various, as the roads they take In journeying thro' life;--the task be mine, To paint the gloomy horrors of the tomb; Th' appointed place of rendezvous, where all These travellers meet.--Thy succours I implore, Eternal King! whose potent arm sustains The keys of Hell and Death.--The Grave, dread thing! Men shiver when thou'rt named: Nature appall'd Shakes off her wonted firmness.--Ah ! how dark The long-extended realms, and rueful wastes! Quite round the pile, a row of reverend elms, (Coeval near with that) all ragged show, Long lash'd by the rude winds. Some rift half down Their branchless trunks; others so thin at top, That scarce two crows can lodge in the same tree. Strange things, the neighbours say, have happen'd here; Wild shrieks have issued from the hollow tombs; Dead men have come again, and walk'd about; And the great bell has toll'd, unrung, untouch'd. (Such tales their cheer at wake or gossipping, When it draws near to witching time of night.) Oft in the lone church yard at night I've seen, By glimpse of moonshine chequering thro' the trees, The school boy, with his satchel in his hand, Whistling aloud to bear his courage up, And lightly tripping o'er the long flat stones, (With nettles skirted, and with moss o'ergrown,) That tell in homely phrase who lie below. Sudden he starts, and hears, or thinks he hears, The sound of something purring at his heels; Full fast he flies, and dare not look behind him, 'Till, out of breath, he overtakes his fellows, Who gather round and wonder at the tale Of horrid apparition tall and ghastly, That walks at dead of night, or takes his stand O'er some new-open'd grave; and (strange to tell!) Evanishes at crowing of the cock. The new-made widow, too, I've sometimes 'spy'd, Sad sight! slow moving o'er the prostrate dead: Listless, she crawls along in doleful black, While bursts of sorrow gush from either eye, Fast falling down her now untasted cheek, Prone on the lowly grave of the dear man She drops; while busy meddling memory, In barbarous succession, musters up The past endearments of their softer hours, Tenacious of its theme. Iron-sleet of arrowy shower Hurtles in the darken'd air. Glitt'ring lances are the loom, Where the dusky warp we strain, Weaving many a soldier's doom, Orkney's woe, and Randver's bane. See the grisly texture grow, ('Tis of human entrails made,) And the weights, that play below, Each a gasping warrior's head. Shafts for shuttles, dipt in gore, Shoot the trembling cords along. Sword, that once a monarch bore, Keep the tissue close and strong. Mista black, terrific maid, Sangrida, and Hilda see, Join the wayward work to aid: Tis the woof of victory. Ere the ruddy sun be set, Pikes must shiver, javelins sing, Blade with clatt'ring buckler meet, Hauberk crash, and helmet ring. Sisters, weave the web of death; Sisters, cease, the work is done. Hail the task, and hail the hands! Songs of joy and triumph sing! Joy to the victorious bands; Triumph to the younger king. Mortal, thou that hear'st the tale, Learn the tenor of our song. Scotland thro' each winding vale Far and wide the notes prolong. Sisters, hence with spurs of speed: Each her thund'ring falchion wield; Each bestride her sable steed. Now fades the glimm'ring landscape on the sight, And all the air a solemn stillness holds, Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight, And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds; Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tow'r The moping owl does to the moon complain Of such, as wand'ring near her secret bow'r, Molest her ancient solitary reign. Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade, Where heaves the turf in many a mould'ring heap, Each in his narrow cell for ever laid, The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep. 'tis a gala night Within the lonesome latter years! An angel throng, bewinged, bedight In veils, and drowned in tears, Sit in a theatre, to see A play of hopes and fears, While the orchestra breathes fitfully The music of the spheres. Mimes, in the form of God on high, Mutter and mumble low, And hither and thither fly- Mere puppets they, who come and go At bidding of vast formless things That shift the scenery to and fro, Flapping from out their Condor wings Invisible Woe! That motley drama- oh, be sure It shall not be forgot! With its Phantom chased for evermore, By a crowd that seize it not, Through a circle that ever returneth in To the self-same spot, And much of Madness, and more of Sin, And Horror the soul of the plot. But see, amid the mimic rout A crawling shape intrude! A blood-red thing that writhes from out The scenic solitude! It writhes!- it writhes!- with mortal pangs The mimes become its food, And seraphs sob at vermin fangs In human gore imbued. Out- out are the lights- out all!
