Elder Middle School [email protected] (817)814-4100 Course Requirements: This course is recommended for students in grades 7-8. Students must have signed parent permission form to use cooking equipment in labs. Course Description: The goal of this course is to create a culture of high expectation and continuous improvement that provides middle school students with a foundation for success in high school, future studies, and careers. FWISD has chosen to offer this class with an emphasis on culinary arts to guide students who are preparing to attend Northside High School’s Culinary Arts Program. Course Topics: Understanding Self – Personality Characteristics Career Exploration: Academic requirements Certifications needed Technical/skill requirements Level of Education needed Communication Skills Community Service Leadership, Teamwork & Conflict Management Work Ethics Kitchen Safety & Sanitation Nutrition and Wellness Safe use of Equipment Application of Culinary Skills Reading and interpreting recipes Measuring skills Knife skills Using small equipment, ovens and microwave ovens Field Trips: We will go to Northside High School to work with their culinary arts students. Classroom Expectations: Come to class prepared and ready to learn. Show respect to others and yourself. Follow school rules. Follow classroom directions and procedures. An attitude of professionalism will be maintained at all times in the classroom. All students are expected to act in a socially acceptable manner and follow all rules in the FWISD Student Handbook as well as classroom and lab procedures set by Ms. Ledbetter. Grading Policy: The FWISD grading policy as stated in the Student Handbook will be followed. A list of assignments and due dates will be posted in the classroom at all times. It will be updated as new assignments are given. Students will be required to write assignments in planner each day at the beginning of class. Homework: Students will be given assignments to practice at home. Some of these assignments may include: knife skills, measuring ingredients, nutrition and reading product labels. I encourage you to have your student help you prepare meals for your family if they don’t already. The more practice they have, the easier class will be! Make Up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to get makeup assignments from the teacher. This can be done in class or through email. Students will need to make an appointment to meet with teacher before or after school to make up tests. Cooking labs that are missed will have to be made up at home with parental supervision. Extra Credit: Any work that goes above and beyond expectations of the assignment will earn extra credit. Separate extra credit assignments will only be given if all regular assignments have been completed. Students can also earn bonus points by bringing classroom supplies listed below, Box tops for Education labels or old magazines that we can use in class. Communication: Keeping current with assignments is crucial to maintaining good grades. Do not wait until the week of report cards to try to catch up or ask for extra credit. Please use the parent access in Focus each week to check on your student’s grades. You may email Ms. Ledbetter at [email protected] with any questions or concerns you have about class. Supplies Needed: 1 Box of Kleenex Folder with pockets, brads and notebook paper Pen or pencil

Supplies needed: Students are expected to have paper and something to write with every day. A folder with brads and pockets is required, but a three ring binder is the easiest way to organize notes, add handouts and keep everything in order. It is your choice which one you would rather use. Spiral notebooks will also work, but it will need to have pockets to keep handouts in. Students will be asked to write their assignment for the day in a planner or on the assignment sheet provided to them in class. Please check your child’s planner each day to ensure that they are keeping up with assignments. Other supplies may be necessary to complete projects as the year goes along. Food for cooking labs will be provided by FWISD.
