I. GOOD NEWS
NC ARTS EDUCATION COORDINATORS FALL MEETING Thank you to the approximately fifty-five arts education leaders in our state, and host, Lisa Pearce of Meredith College, who attended the NC Arts Education Coordinators Meeting in Raleigh on Friday, September 28, 2012! These folks are dedicated and tireless in their efforts to support a comprehensive arts education for the nearly 1.5 million school children in NC's schools! Framed under NC’s definition of a Comprehensive Arts Education, the agenda included a joint update from the NC Department of Public Instruction and NC Department of Cultural Resources including information and resources from the A+ Schools Program of the NC Arts Council, Arts in Education programs of the NC Arts Council, NC Virtual Public School, the NC Symphony, and the NC Museum of Art. The afternoon included breakout sessions, where participants shared tools and strategies that are being used for standards implementation at the local level. The materials from the meeting may be accessed online at: http://ances.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/NC+Arts+Education+Coordinators. The next meeting will take place on Monday, April 29, 2013, hosted by Janae Copeland - Arts Education, World Languages, and ESL Coordinator for Onslow County Schools.

III. ARTICLES OF INTEREST
THE FORGOTTEN CORE DISCIPLINE Policymakers of all stripes routinely declare their devotion to the arts and its importance in students’ lives. They often cite findings that students who have arts education outperform their peers on most indicators of academic achievement. Many will relate their own experiences in a music or art class and fondly recall a favorite arts teacher who encouraged them. Yet when it comes to making tough decisions regarding resources, the arts are frequently sacrificed. Especially in the nation’s poorest schools, dance, theatre, visual arts, and music may be viewed as enrichment, rather than core academic disciplines. http://www.nassp.org/Content.aspx?topic=The_Forgotten_Core_Discipline
LET’S GET SERIOUS ABOUT CULTIVATING CREATIVITY Welcome to the creative era. To fuel the 21st-century economic engine and sustain democratic values, we must unleash and nurture the creative impulse that exists within every one of us, or so say experts like Richard Florida, Ken Robinson, Daniel Pink, Keith Sawyer, and Tom Friedman. Regrettably, as other countries, like China, look to America as a model for how to educate citizens to be creative, we are undermining creativity in K-12 education through relentless standardized testing and the marginalization of subjects like art and music. http://snaap.indiana.edu/pdf/news/Let's%20Get%20Serious%20About%20Cultivating %20Creativity%20(9.4.2011)%20-%20The%20Chronicle%20Review%20-%20The %20Chronicle%20of%20Higher%20Education.pdf

HOW ART WORKS 3 The National Endowment for the Arts just released their report entitled How Art Works. The report outlines the Endowment's fire year research agenda with a System Map of the arts and a measurement model. The report makes for a great read as it examines the arts by zooming out to view the entire landscape. Sunil Iyengar, Director, Research and Analysis for the NEA, states "We now welcome broader public engagement with scholars, arts practitioners and policy makers so that the report can provoke fresh research and insights about the value and impact of the arts in America." http://www.arts.gov/research/How-Art-Works/
