EXAMEN UNIDAD 10. NAME: GRADE:

1. Read the following text and answer the questions: 1.5 points. Charles II, King of Spain, known among Spanish kings as "The Bewitched", was the son of Philip IV by his second marriage with Maria, daughter of the emperor Ferdinand III, his niece. He was born on the 11th of November 1661. His birth was greeted with joy by the Spaniards, who feared the dispute as to the succession which must have ensued if Philip IV left no male issue. Charles II until the age of five or six he was fed only from the breast of a nurse. For years it was not thought safe to allow him to walk. Prominent chins was so bad that he had problems chewing. It's also said that it was difficult to understand Carlos when he spoke. Although he was married twice Carlos II fathered no children, and it is assumed that he was infertile if not actually impotent. He was most of the time sick because of high fevers which kept him confined to his bed. It's also said that he suffered from seizures, that he invariably vomited on carriage rides due to chronic motion sickness. Due to his weak health, he remained mostly idle while his mother, his bastard brother Don Juan José of Austria, and his advisors made most of the decisions affecting the Empire, with Carlos' most vigorous activity consisting of the occasional hunt.

A fantatic made the discovery that the king was bewitched, and his confessor Froilan Diaz supported the belief. The king was exorcised. The Inquistion interfered, and the dying king was driven mad among them. Very near his end he had the curiosity to open the coffins of his embalmed ancestors. The sight of the body of his first wife, at whom he also insisted on looking, provoked a passion of tears and despair. Under severe pressure from the cardinal archbishop of Toledo, Portocarrero, he finally made a will in favor of Philip, Duke of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV, and died on the 1st of November 1700.
